ONLY ONE TEST FOR A COW.
‘If your cow is right and the other conditions are right, you must make a success of dairying. How a‘e you to knowif your cowis right? by weighing the milk every mght and morning, year in and year out— by keeping a debit and credit ac- count with the cow. In the herds of the patrons of this factory there are some good cows; there are other c ws that are living at the expense of the good ones. In order to find out which are profitable you should have a set of scales in your barn for the purpose of weighing each milk- ing of each cow, anda sheet of paper for the purpose of recording the facts shown by the scales. But weighing alone is not sufficient. The milk ofeach cow should be tested. Mr. Sproule. manager of the fac- tory, will make the test for you.

It costs $28 to $34 a year to keep a cow on full feed,the variation being accord- ing to the capacity of different ani- mais toturn their food into milk, The cost of mere maintenance is $20, Every dollar’s worth of feed over that which your cow will assimilate represents profit. If you merely maintain the animal you have no profit; if your cow will take $5 worth of feed above cost of maintenance it will givea profit; if $10 worth a , greater profit. Keep adding to the feed so long as the cew responds through the milk pail. Occasionally work backwards. If you can reduce the feed without reducing the milk flow you are feeding too much and wasting your substance. A cow should give 250 Ibs. of butter on $30 worth of feed. The best of my cows in ‘97 gave 413 lbs.; in ’98 she gave 409 Ibs. She went dry for four mouths and she has never been as good since. The great majority of the cows of Ontario do not come any- where near 250 lbs. The average return per cow in this Province, ac- cording to Professor Dean, is 128 ébs. It isnot hard to figure out | how much profit there is in that. Keep a record of your cows, then, and weed out those that are mere | boarders.

There must be gentleness with dairy cat- tle. Aman who goes.about witha damn here and a kick there has mistaken his calling, if he under- takes to handle milch cows. Gentle- ness pays. A little rub on the back will put a cowin good humor for half a day.

The milking and feed- ing of cattle must be carried on with the regularity of the town clock. We milk at.a quarter to five in the summer and.a quarter to six in the winter.
