It. was just daylight. Blacky the Crow had stopped in the Old Orchard. He was in the next tree to one in which Spooky the Screech Owl had a snug winter home. Spooky had just returned from an all-night hunt. The tail of a mouse was hanging from a mrner -of his bill. He had liunlcd all night. long and this half--,:rown

Mouse was all he had rauglii. This is a tough wintei." sad Spooky. Blacky said it was the toughest winter he had ever known.

"What did you stay for'."' asked Spooky.

"What. did you stay for?"

"This is home." replied Spooky. as if that answer were suffici- ent and explained everything.

Blacky nodded. "You've said it!" said he understandingly. "I have found by experience that it is bet- ler to be home with little to out than far away with plenty to cat."

"That is just the way I feel." said Spooky, and swallowed the tail that had been hanging from the corner of his bill. "I suppose it

have to go where it is warmer and where because of this they can find a good living. Of course if one lives wholly on insects and worms, and cannot eat anything else, he must go where the food ls."

Once more Blacky nodded his head in agreement. "I guess you and I are alike." said he.

The little Owl fluffed his fea- thers all out until he looked half again as big as he really was. "I guess we are nothing of the kind." he protested. "How two folk zould look more unlike. I do not know."

Blacky chuckled. It was A harsh sort of a chuckle, for BlIcky's voice is harsh most of the time. He has some unbelieveably sweet love notes, but they are especi- nliy for Mrs. Blacky in the spring.

"Spooky is 1 plucky little fel- low. Yes. sir. for such is little fel- low he has I. lot of pluck. it takes COUPE!!! to stay when food is so scarce. We don't look at all alike. but in some ways we are two of a kind." said Blacky.
