Now, when the summer over, and a winter campaign

campaign is i3 about to make up a debtor and creditor account, showing how much has been so far lost, and how mach gained, by a peculiarly Christian and hu- manitarian war. Wado not pretend that the recknoning is complete; possibly a few items have to be added, but this our readers must do for themselves.

On the one side we have :—

1. A hundred thousand men, or there- about, slaughtered, gashed, and mutilated.

2. ‘Tens of thousands more dead of col i, fatigue, privation, and disease.

3. Very many others suffering from the same ills (‘Trains of sick are passing to the Danube by a thousand carts at a time.’’)

4. Home suffering to any degree within the compiss of human imagination, occa- sioned as above in hundreds of villages and towns.

5. Steady wholesale destruction, through overwork, want of food, and the engines ol War, amongst good useful beasts (these creatures being incapable of any entiusi- asms of humanity.)

6. The crops, cattle, farm houses of whole provinces ravaged and destroyed. Hundreds of villages burnt, and their in habitants (such as have escaped murde:) adrift on the world,

7. Whole populations instructed in raps and massacre as a means of securing civi and religious liberty; and practising the same.

8. All the waste of material which ac- conipanies waste of life in warfare. Ad- dition to analreafy grinding taxation to make good this waste asit occurs. The certainty that increased taxation will be continued long after the war, to refurni«b empty stores and arsenals and to ‘ reor ganize’, shattered forces. And a vast ins calculable loss in trade and industry.

9. The rekindling. throughout yast re» gions and over several populations, of the most atrocious ofall ferocities, religious hate.

10. The evil, whatever it may amount to, of familiarizing mankind once more with the worst savageries of ancient, un- civilized wariare, with wholesale slaughter, and the most reckless use of men’s lives.

11. The spectacle of lying, hypocrisy. and rapacity passing for truth, virtue and self-sacrifice. ; he

On the other side we have to reckon :—

1. The lessons brought home to Turkey, and the prospect that that empire, fist lapsing into corruption and desuetude, may become purified and invigorated,

2. The solace of knowing that a large partofthe money lost to Turkish bond. holders has so far ensured the protection of British interests.

3. The disosvery of the true use ani purpose of autonomous provinces, and the explosion of various blunders and lies as to the condition of the Christian peasantry ot Turkey.

4. The unveiling of a vast deal of poli- tical imposture abroad, and the timely detection of much dangerous nonsense at home. °

o. Certain provinces, already blessed with a fruitful soil, made more fruithful tor the future by the ashes of burned crops and the bodies of slain men.

6. A large percentage of profit for seves ral rich contractors.

The London ‘ Lumber Trades’ Journal ”’ says that the stocks in London from North America do not increase, while deals from the North of Europe are accumulating largely. It says: ~

‘* The stock of pine and epruce deals on the ist of October iast year in the docks of London consisted of 3 048 847 pieces, this year only 2.658,540 pieces: or about 390... 00) sbort of last year’s October stock, and as itis now admitted that there was no exs cess last year, it is not unlikely that a brisk trade will be done in these goods between this and the spring.

‘The stock of New Brunswick spruce deal; in Liverpool on the 29th September amounted to 18.7949 standards, and the consumption for the month was [0 57] standards. The total consumption from February Ist has been 59953 standards, Tae stock of birch amounted to 255.000 feet, and the consumption tor the month was 79,000.

‘‘At Newcastle-on-Tyne, the arrivals of timber, we are told, have been very large, but, as trade was quite active, prices were maintained. The timber was rapidly going into consumption and stocks were small. At Bristol, the importation of wood goods had also been heavy, chietly from Canada,

‘anias the trade was quiet, stocks were

accumulating with a fair demand for spruce deals and birch. At Glasgow, the arrivals had been numerous, mainly with deals from Quebec and Miramichi, and the mur- ket was abundantly supplied,” - es ee ~

A confirmation of the strange report that

Concession of Harwich township is given hy a school teacher of the neighborhood

who, in a letter to the London Free Press testifies to what he &aw, as follows :—

‘‘ Having dismissed the children for the day, I Was rétursing to my boarding place when, with a side giance, | discovered something in the grass. At first I thought it was some species of rattlesnake but upon more careful scrutiny, [ found it was a fine, firm, fresh fish of the pickered species. Having been brought up at the seashore | knew at once the fish was good, and picked it up, while wondering whence it game, My astonishment was increased, however, when, stepping on a few yards further, [ found another equally good.
