—The Empire remarks that two hundr. d millions more capital is invested in Cena- dian manafactures than ten years sgo— and yet the Grits are not satisfied.

—The latest Musical Times, London, says ; ‘Oratorio enters far more complete- ly and extensively into the musical life of the English people than apy other form of the art. Together with the cantata, sacred or secular, it constitutes the staple of every festival programme. At all (festivals) ora- torio constitutes the musicul raison d’etre.” —A San Francisco despatch reports that on May 28 the Hawaiian Legisla ure will meet, and the most important subj-ct to come before that body will be the ques- tion of annexation to the United States, From what can be gathered the proposition seems to meet with favor, ani it is nut considered «a hard matter to determine the outeome if the legislature submits the quas- tion tothe people. Sugar planters are working for annexation, and are using all means to carry it to a successful issue, even ‘f the final vote of the inhabitants of the island, ba necessary to insure its success. — The Globe being so fond of publishing facsimiles cf letters, the Empire suggests that it devote a page to the note in which, Mr. Laurier gave Pacaud permission to go to Europe; the note in which Mr, Cha: lton refers to J D, Edgar as a “machine poli- ticiap’; the letter in which Sir Richard Cartwright calls the Maritime Provinces ‘shreds and patches”; the letter in which Edward Farrer advises the Grit party not to make “two bits cf a cherry” but to go in for immediate anpexation; or some of the bumerous letteis written by Count Mercier, and which it was asserted daring his first trial had been somehow or other lost,

Obituary.

It is with sorrow that we find ourselves called upon to record the death of Alice, the beluved wife of Mr. David McQuarrie, of Crapaud, and eldest daughter of Mr. George Nicholson, of the same place. The circum- stances of this trying bereavement are sad in the extreme. On Thursday evening, the 5.h iast., she took suddenly ill, and notwith- standing the fact that two skilled physicians were in attendance, she only lasted until Sabbath morning, the 15th inat., when she breathed her last, leaving a disconsolate busband and three smal! children to mourn their loss, She was a consistent member of the Methodist Chureh, and her relatives and friends have the assarance that she has goue to join the throng and mingle with loved ones who have gone on before. She was laid to rest at the old cemetery, Crapard, to- day, the 16 h icst,

Schoo! Examination.

The Superintendent of Education made & personal examination of the school at Cardigan Bridge on Thursday, the 5th inst. He expressed great satisfaction at the good condition of the school buildiug, furniture and grounds, and was highly pleased with the proficiency displayed by the scholars, both in the primary and ad- vanced departments. he teachers, Mr. Timothy McDonald and Misa Kennedy, are to be congratulated on the great progress the scholars under their charge have made during the past year ; and they were highly complimented by the Superintendent. A aumber of visitors from the village were present during the examination, among them the Chairman of the Trustees, Wm. P. Lewis. E-q , who is always attentive to the interests of the achool.

There seems to be no good reason why the echool at Cardigan Bridge should not be ranked as a grammar school in the future, as we are informed that the Super- intendent found in it the necessary qualifications. It is to be hoped that he wi.l urge the matter on the Board of Edu- cation.

Good Breeding in King’s County.

Among the promising young horses in K ng’s County that are likely to give a god account of themselves during the pre- sent season mention msy be made of the handsome All Rght filly owned by D Reilly, E-q, Montague, that took first prize at the King’s County Exhibition last Oxtober for carriage filly under three years. During the past year this filly bas been well handled, and is now showing fiae de- velopment of speed, trotting halves in 1.20 on ordinary tracks. Along with being an excellent representative of the celsbrated All Right family, this filly combines the

Frenchman, McInnis pony and S:ladin, and we will be much disappvinted if the present season does not see some record breaking in the 3-year-olds,

Mr. Reiliy is also fortunate enough to have a fine horse foal from Elmo, 2.27}, out of the dam of his All Right filly, and all who see it are loud in their praises of its beauty.

Forsome Sm past the people of New Perth have been at a disadvantage for want uf a suitabie plice for holding public meet- ings. Soeue of the young men who are identified with the temperance society of this place have organized themselves into a committee, forthe purpose of building a public hall, They have succeeded in en- listing the sympathy and uid f the good ladica, and intend holding a grand Tes Party early in duly, for the purpose of raising funds to carry out the project. The committee will spare no pains to make the vecasion pleasant and enjuyable.

New Perth has long been known as a fine ‘gricultural settlement, and will this year efford an additional attraction in the Ex- perimental Station, the first of the kind established on Prince Edward Island.

The section of country now known as New Perth was at one time covered with a furest, the thickest and heaviest that then covered the face of our Island home. In this howling wilderness, nearly seventy years ago, a small body uf men and their faithful wives from the highlands of Perth- shire cought a hume. With fortitude and patience they endured all the hardships and privations iacident to pioneer life, and in the course of time had their reward, for their long years of toil and sclf-aenial, in seeing the ** forest primey 1” give way to « beautiful landscape, adorned with fertile fields and cumtortable smiling homesteads. Sir Walter Soott tells us that the County of Perth is the most beautiful County in all Scotland ; and although our Island Pro- vince cannot boast of such scenery as ** the ateep frowning glories and the crags chat sre wild and majestic”—such scenes de scribed by Sir Walter as “* beauty lying in the lap cf terror”—yet we should feel grateful that Mother Nature, in distribut- ing her bounties, has not been unmindful sf ua. In the Gem of the Gulf is to be found a wealth of pastoral beauty of which we should ali feel proud. And our quiet settlement, which bears the name of the grand old County from which its people came, is for beauty of landscape and fer- tility of soil unsurpassed in Prince Eiward

Cattle Shipmeats at Cardigan.

The Schr. Soudan, DeCosta Master, ssiled from Cardigan Bridge for 3t. John's, Nfid., on Saturday. the l4:h inst , with 61 head fat cattle and 21 sheep, valued at $2,300.00, shipped by Jas, E. Macdonald, Esq. This cargo, one of the largest of fat cattie ship from King’s County for some years, included many excellent animals, among which was the fine Shorthorn bull fed by Mr. James Me- Leod, of Victoria Cross, weighing 2,000 ibs.; @ well-fatted cow fed by Mr. Wm. Nicholson, of Dundas, weighing 1,315 lbs; and four two- year olds fed by Mr. George E. Goff, of Cardigan, All the oattle in this cargo were fed in the adjvining settlements, and were sold at fairly good prices.

On the 17th inst, the schr. Ovion sailed from Cardigsn Bridge for St. Pierre, Mique- lon, with the following cargo, viz, 32 head fat cattle, 35 fat sieep, and a quantity of potatoes, valued at $1,300.09, shipped by D. ©. Moreon * Co,

The shipment of the above ocargoea has made trade brisk around Cardigan during the past week,

An Eaglish journal is rather impressed with the frequency with which our leaders bear the namsz of John. The late Premier was so named, the present Premier like- wise, while the leader of the House of Commons bears it too Perhaps John is a lucky name, though when it is prefixed by Richard it has no go in it at all.
