but sprang up in a geveration from the compost heap of the Revolution. Of course the times have changed since young Napoleon was sent to clear the streets of Paris, and secure the peace of the Assembly. It is one of the most re- markable things about a remarkable era that the Revolution of 1798 was accom- plished and the Republic established to- tally against the will of the French people. ‘There is a Republic, but “there are no Republicans,” said one of the agitators. It was terror that produced the submis- sion. In England, a century before, a new dynasty was established in peace with the vast majority of the people still true in heart to the deposed Stuarts. It was the aristocrats who brought sbout the revolution. Perhaps we may say it was the aristocrats who brought about the latter revolution too—in a different manner.
But, as has been said, the traditions of the Bonapartes are strong, and as one Crown came out of the Repuvlic for them, they perhaps hope for another in the same line of acquisition—at least that may be Jerome’s way of looking at it. The spiritof the great uncle pre- vails still. In his last will and testament the late Napoleon II[. addressed these words to his son the ill-fated Prince Im- perial : “ You must reflect that from the heavens on high those whom you have loved look down upon you. It is the soul of my great uncle that has always inspired and sustained me. It will be the same with my son, for he will be worthy of his name.’ No one can say that the young Prince has been unworthy of it. But the soul of the great uncle will witness no more deeds of his. Itis Jerome who takes up the Crown, and gives it to the
Republic. Will the Republic ever give itback again? ‘This is the French mys- tery.
