Sergeant Grey Meets a Misfortune.

Orrawa, Aug. 29.

In the D. R. A. matches, the Dominion of Canada match was won by the 3rd Victoria Rifles, Montreal, with a score of 551, the average per man being 91 points, 56 per cent. per man. This is the highest average ever made by a team of six men on the Rideau Range. The Minister of Militia’s cup went to the Victoria Rifle Club, Hamilton. During yesterday a great misfortune befell Sergi. Grey, of Charlottetown. He put on a score of 91 in the Dominion of Canada’s match; but when his rifle came to be examined, it was found, contrary to regulations, that the minimum pull of the trigger was less than six pounds. The result was that Grey’s score was disallowed. He _ loses the prize of $8,and what is worse, with 91 points off his grand aggregate score he is effectually debarred from coming within the Governor’s 100 and shooting for a place on the Bisley team.

In the Macdougall challenge match, the possible being fifty points, the second prize of $20 and a badge, goes to Sergt. Davi-on, of Charlottetown, who made 46 points.

In the Dominion of Canada match, yesterday, seven rounds attwo, five and six hundreds vards, Sergt. J. M. Davison scored ninety-two points and won eight eight dollars; Sergt.-Major Grey, 91 points and eight dollar-; Major Long- worth, 89 points and five dollars; Lient. Ewen Stewart, 87 points and four dollars; Sergt. Allen, 86 points and four dollars. eighteen 86’s counted out.

A Drinking Driver Disqualified,

Bancor, Me., Aug. 29

In the 2.27 trot yesterday, Carvell, of St. John, owner and driver of Speculation, came on for a second heat in a condition unfitting him for driving. He was scored out of p sition several times, and the judges fearing an accident, ordered a new driver. Carvell refused to let anvone but himself drive the horse, and thev sent him to the stable. The judges announced that he would be expelled from all the tracks of the Nationa] Association. Speculation was second in the first heat.

Arrested the Wrong Man.

Rockianp, Me., Ang. 29.

Jaek McEachern, of P. E. I-lan-l, has been arrested here for setting incendiary fires of late. It has, however, been ascer- tained that McEachern only arrived here on Monday by the boat. It is, therefore, quite impossible he is the incendiary, though he was seen hanging around in the vicinity of the fire of Monday night. It is supposed he is insane.

Politics in the Northwest. Ortawa, Aug. 29.

Mr. Laurier’s visit to the Northwest is not to be allowed to pass unnoticed by the Conservative chiefs. In October a series of meetings will be held throughout the territories, at which Sir Charles Hibbert Tupper will be the principal speaker. Messrs. Daly and Ouimet will accompany him.
