The Course of Canadian Trade.

Ir is interesting to note the course of Canadian trade as indicated in the official returos. Since 1880 there has been a large increase in Canadian imports. Last year there was a slight falling off, but even last year the value of the imports amounted to $102,710,019 as against $71,782,349 in 1880.

From this fact of an increasing import trade it has been argued that the Nation- al Policy has failed in its object of fostering home manufactures; for it seems clear that if the Canadian people are consuming a greater number of imp- ported articles, they cannot be consumiag @ greater number of articles of home manufacture. But they are. How can that be?

Well, there has been an increase of wealth and population. There are more persons to purchase imported goods; and the persons are able to purchase more. This will be admitted, and still the problem remained unsolved. It is only by a study of the different kinds of articles imported that we can come to an understanding of the matter.

By referring to the Trade Returns it will be seea that there has been a radical chaage ia the course oftrade. Formerly we imported a larger proportion of manufactured articles ; now we import a larger proportion of raw materials to be manufactured by our people. The Mon treal Guzette institutes a comparison between the value of the raw materials imported in 1879—the year before the Natioval Policy came into operation— and last year. This comparison shows that a wonderful change has been effected. The value of raw materials imported iu the two periods was as fol- lows :—

Thus it appears that the value of the raw materials imported last year was nearly three times what it was in 1879; aad that labor formerly employed abroad in making goods for Canadian people is now employed at home.

Forther, it must be remembered that Canadiens, themselves, furaish a large proportion of the materials used in their factories. This fact is of course well known, but it is the more apparent from the very marked difference in the increase of the value of the raw ma- terials imported which are produced in Canada and which are not produced in Canada. Taus the increase in the im port of raw cotton is from $984,047 worth to $2,493,288 worth, or at the rate of about 160 per cent., while the increase io the import of wool is only from $841,173 worth to $1,342,405 worth, or at the rate of about 80 per cent.—showiug that a large proportion of home grown wool is used in the Canadian woollen factories. Note the immense increase in the imports of raw sugar, tobacco-leaf and other’raw ma- terials which cauvot be produced in Canada, but which are now manufac- tured here and afford home employment for our capital and labor.

Agnio, the increase in the quantity of coal imported is significant of widely exteaded home manufactures; and it ought to be noted that the output of Nova Scotia coal has increased in the same period the rate of nearly 100 per cent.

Un the other hand, though the prices in great Britain and elsewhere were wever lower, the trade returns show that the imports of manufactured goods, has ic the same time fallen off. Examine the following comparison of imports of manufactured goods :

Thus, while there has been a great increase in the import of raw material, there has been a decided decrease in the import of manufactured articles; and there has been moderate and increasing prosperity in Canada, and wide exten- sion of Canadian trade.

question, Their leading organ, the Toronto Globe, in May last announced that—

‘ They (the people) were never more in earnest, never more determined that justice shall be done, and that the doing of it shall not be unduly de- layed. The mode in which itis to be done they are willing to leave to the Government, but what the Government does they watch closely, and a policy of procrastination they will’ not tolerate. They desire that the miserable man charged with having incited this rebellion should have a fair trial, but asthey are resolved to have no more rebellion, as they desire to prevent the further eifusion of the blood of their young men, they will hold Sir John Macdonald and his colleagues responsible should there bea failure of justice, They make no demonstrations, they make no cry for vengeance. Calm, but stern and determined, they demand that justice be dene.”

Two other influential Reform papers put the matter in this way :—

** Nothing short of hanging for Riel will satisfy the people of this province. If he does not get that it will be because the pistol has been put to Sir John’s ear by French-Canadian influence, and this should be a iust and sufficient cause for Ontario to call a halt and demand a reconstruc- tion of the federal ship or a disunion. A French ascendancy is out of the question, and not to be endured or tolerated.—-Mitcheli Recorder.

“The English-speaking people wil) not much longer submit to French dictation. If Confedera- tion is to be maintained intact, the laws must be impartially administered, irrespective of nation- ality, color or religion ; neither must one province be allowed to bleed another, as is the case at pre- sent. Riel not only shed blood himself, but caused blood to be shed without having the slight- est cause todoso. And not to hang such aviliaiu is unpardonable. The demand madein Ontario is not a cry for vengeance, but a demand simply to let the law take its course on a notorious male- factor.”—Barrie Examiner.

— As an instance of the evils of the “eredit system,” the Monetary Times cites the following case :—

“Nearly three years ago, a genera) store busi- ness was begun by Mr. C. G. Armstrong, in the Ontario village of that name, andin so short a period he found no difliculty in trusting over $13,700 worth of goods in the hands of honest far- meérs on credit. The consequence is that to-day he is a bankrupt, with only $11,638 worth of goods on his shelves and owing over $22,000 !”

Just as notable cases have occurred nearer home. As the Jfonetary Times remarks, ‘‘it is absurd to speak of one’s outstandings as being ‘perfectly good’ when they cannot be collected when most needed.”

—The Mayor of Toronto has set -his face against corporation contractors who do not honestly perform the contracts into which they eater. He insists that a man who has been proved unreliable by reason of shady transactions iu past contracts shall not be employed again, no matter how low his tender may be. He is right. As the Monetary Times remarks: “A dishonest contractor, once discovered, should thenceforth be ruled out.”’

Meeting of Presbytery.

The Presbytery of P. E. Island met in St. Peter's on the 15th inst., at 7 o’clock, p. m., for the purpose of hearing Mr. J. W. McKenzie’s ordination trial. He accord- ingly preached a sermon on 2 Cor., v. 21, and delivered a lecture on Mark. iv., 35-41. He was then examined in Greek by Rev. Wm. P. Archibald, in Hebrew by Rev. A. W. Mahon, in Theology by Rav. Wm. Grant, and in Church History by Rev. James Carruthers. In all of these trials Mr. McKenzie showed more than ordinary ability and scholarship, and the Presbytery very cordially sustained them, and agreed to meet to-morrow morning for his ordina- tion and induction.

March 16: Presbytery again metand was constituted with prayer. The edict having been returned, certified as duly served, was again read in the hearing of the congre- gation assembled. No cbjections having been offered against the life, literature or dectrine of the minister elect, the Presby- tery agreed to proceed with his ordination. The Rev, Mr. Roulston then preached an able and exceedingly appropriate discourse from Eph. IV. 12. Rev, J. G. Cameron narrated the priucipal steps taken in con- nection with this call, The moderator put the usual formula of questions, when Mr, McKenzie was, by prayer and by tho laying on of the hands of the Presbytery, or- dained to the office of the holy ministry. The moderator then gave to the newly ordained minister the right hand of fellow- ship, and in the name and by authority of Presbytery inducted him iato the pastoral chargo of the congregatiou of East St, Peter's. Rev. Wm. P. Archibald, M. A., then suitably addressed the minister, and Rev. J. M. McLeod the congregation on their respective duties and responsibilities,

The congregation, on retiring from the church, welcomed their pastor in the usual way. Mr. McKenzie was then introduced by Rov. Mr. Spencer to the sezsion,and his name was, on motion, added to the roll of presbytery, and he took his seat accord- ingly.

Rev. Mr. Carruthers presented the reportof the committee appointed to confer with the directors of the Protestant Union newspaper, with the view of effecting certain changes in the editorial manage- ment of said paper. He intimated that the Directors had cordially agreed to the pro- posed modifications, and recommended that this Presbytery extend to this paper its moral influence and support. The report was received and its recommendations adopted.

The Committee appointed to prepare a pian for the visitation of our congregations, recommended that the Presbytery be divided into two sections, e2stern and wes- | tern; that the Ministers and representative | Elders east of Charlottetown, including the City Ministers and Eiders, constitute the Eastern Committee, Rev. J G, Cameron Convener; and that those west of Char- lottetown constitute the Western Com- mittee, Rev. Geo. McMillan, Convener.

Upon reconsideralion, the appointment of a meeting for Presbyterial visitation in Calsdonia, Woodville and Little Sands on 30th and 3lst inst., was rescinded, and instead a meeting to be held ia St. James’ Hall, on April lst, at 11 o'clock, a. m., for the purpose of considering the call to Rev. Mr. Grant from Cow Buy, U. B., and for other business, and the Cierk was instruct- ed tocite the congregation of West and | Clyde Rivera and Brookfield to appear at this meeting for their interests.

It was agreed to apply to the Home Mission Board for the services of Messrs. J. R. Coffin, Thomas Corbett, and J. M. McLeod, Catechists, for the ensuing summer.

A letter was read from Rev. J. A. Me- Lean declining the call to Mount Stewart | and West St. Peter’s. The call was accord-

A 68-pounder twenty-five yoars ago was the most powerfal piece of artillery known, and it threw a projectile 1,570 feet per second. Now the weight of guns have in- creased from 5 to 100 tons, the velocities from 1,690 to 2,000 feet, and the energies from 1,100 foot-tons to%2,000 foot-tons.

The cost of governing New York city, per capita, is greater by many times than that of any other erty in the world. It is five times as great as that of London and Ber- lin, and more than seven times as great as that of Paris. It costs $36.65 for every man, womun and child in the city, and the

reason is not far to seek. ,

The following ia a production of Ontario, county of Lanark: ‘We have eight brothers here by the name of Coade who measure in their socks 52 feet 4 inches, and weigh 1,720 pounds, or an average of 215 pounds each. The tallest is 6 feet 7 inches, and the shortest 6 feet 4 inches. The heaviest weighs 277 pounds and lightest 195.’

A huge California hawk swooped down on a sleeping cat at Santa Rosa the other day, and bore it squalling and scratching high in the air. When about 500 feet high the -hawk lost its grip, and the cat came down with fearful velocity, but the hawk caught it again just before it struck the earth, end was carrying it off, whon sud- denly both fell like lead to the ground. The cat had bitten through the hawk’s head, killing it instantly, and the fall killed the cat.
