Accipent.— Yesterday while embarking on board a row boat to go out to visit the flagship Blake, his worship Mayor Haviland was so unfortunate as to fall into the water. He was quickly rescued. Weare glad to be able to say that no injury resulted from the accident.

Tue Warsuirs —H. M. 8S. Biake and Magicienone will remain in port until Friday next. Last night the search lights of the ships illuminated the town and harbor. This afternoon the officers are playing a cricket match at Victoria Park with the Park Club Toemorrow they are to try their fortune on the teonis courts. On Thursday a hop will | be given on board the flagship. To-night Mrs Sullivan gives a ball at Brighton Villa, at which the officers will be entertained ; and to-morrow evening the hospitality of River- side will be extended to them by Mrs L. H. Davies. The ship was yesterday visited by Lt.-Col. Irving, A. D. C., Mr. Harrison Carvell, private secretary to the Lieut..Gov- ernor, the Chief Justice, the Master of the Rolls and His Worship Mayer Havilard.

A Pleasant Excursion.

By invitation of Messrs. Lawson, Har- rington & Co., the officers and men trom the P. E Island Garrison Artillery and the Coburg Garrison Artillery were yesterday afternoon taken for a trip on Halifax har- bor and the Northwest Arm, stopping a short*time at York Redoubt to enable the party to inspect the fortifications there.

There was very little firing at Point Pleasant yesterday, and the score of what took place was not obtained. The chief interest centered in the shifting competi- tion. The Islanders fell short of the posi- tions taken by both the Halifax teams, which were 2.45 and 2.35 respectively. The “A” shift the P. E. Island man yeaterday did in19 50 and made 225 points. The *B” shift took them over 11 minutes.

Ottawa, Aug. 9.

Mr. Campbell, immigration agent, ex- pressed the opinion that the largest portion of the immigration to the Canadian North- west for the next few years will be from the southern side of the line. He says that 162 American delegates attended the recent exhibition in Winnipeg, and after travelling through the country expressed themselves as delighted. He siys that those who have crossed the line to Manitoba this year have in many instances invested in land outside of a homestead, and in no case, so far as he is aware, have they yet put any lien on -heir lands—a rather unusual thing for new

ettlers.

Money In Srrawsekries.—The Kent- ville Star gives the following as shipments of strawberries: Feom Kingston station during July, 1,773 crates and 390 pails; from Berwick, 1,837 crates; from West- ville, 1,643 crates. From this it will be seen that from these three stitions 5,253 crates, or 168,096 quarts, of strawberries have been shipped, and they must have averaged, at very lowest calculation 6 cents per quart, which would mean $10,075, and the 300 pails, which, say 10 quartseach, would add another $180. Os the whole, when the berry growers of the westera part of the coun- try ship $10,225 worth of strawberries in one month we are forced to look upon this branch of the small fruit as of the utmost import- ance, There are several small stations from which shipments of berries were made and of them Aylesford probably shipped the most, so the above figures cannot by any means be taken as a total output of the western part of the country, while from several points to the eastward shipments are made.
