In California not only is steam freight ing with traction engines largely prac- ticed, but its use, acording to the Min- ing and Scientific Press, is decidedly in- creasing. That paper prefaces an {l- lustrated descripii n of a wagon train drawn by a traction engine with a load of 40 tons and capabl> of ascending a grade of 500 feet to the mile with the re- mark that the high-power traction en- gines are not only extensively, but also profitably employed in Cu.lifornia in this traffic. The train described is now in use in hauling salt a distance of 30 miles over the desert in San Bernar- dino County in this S ate, from the mines of the Cryste] Sat Company to Danby, a point on the Atlantic & Paci- fic Railroad, to be shiped to @ fferent points. The Queen was at Acquisgrana two or three years ago, and one morning was passing along the border of the lake, when a pcasant went by leading at the end of a rope a well built donkey, which woulkl Fave been handsome had it not been <0 thin as to excite a suspicion ihat its Inst meal had been scanty and many days before.
