THE ASYLUM INQUIRY

Tue government has been careful to have the meetings of the Lunatic Asylum Commission ata time when public atten~ tion is absorbed in the Transvaal crisis, the Toternational Yacht race, and the prospect of Provincial and Dominion elections. Premier Farquharson, apperently, imagines that the faults of the Administration iu respect to the Asylum will not be criticised to any great extent at the present junc- ture. He has been at the investigation to make little speeches and ask leading ques~ tions. The Commmissioners whom he has appointed are not, it appears, to be trusted to conduct and contro) ihe en- quiry. Perhaps he will try to “45x” their report.\ The public has its eye upon him.

MR. IRVING'S DUTY
Ir was, of course, impossible that Mr. D. P. Irving should remsin upon the Asylum Commission and be a Govern- ment candidate in the Belfast district. “The eternal fitness of things” would have been outraged by such a conjunction ef services, andthe electors of Belfast would bave protested after the practica) manner sometimes adopted by votere at the polje, Mr. Irving will now have leisure to justify, if he can, the heaping up ofan enormous public debt of about $600,000, the dispersion of the Provincial assets at the Land Office, the passage of a Liquor License Law for Charlottetown, and various Other acts for which the Gov- ernment, whose champion he has be- come, are on trial before the people. We stall see how well he will perform the duty accepted by him when he accepted nomination as the Government's candi- date for Belfast.

THE Gvarpiay, which received a good deal of credit couceraing the “ noble stand” it took in respect to the passage of a Liguor License Law for Charlottetown, is now exerting all its ingenuity to find, and submit tothe people, reasons why the Attorney General should not be opposed in Murray Harbour. Evidently its “noble stand”? was merely hypocritica]. If The Guardian bad meant what it said about the passage of tLe License Law, it would gladly hail and take advantage of the first opportunity, and every opportunity, to “turn the rascals vut.” Instead of that i! finds fault with thoee who nominated Mr. A. P. Prowse in opposition to the new Attorney Genera!,— whose defeat will be a death-biew to the unprincipled combina- tion. The nowination of Mr. Prowse is from every point ot view—except that of the government—to be commended ; and there is nothing whatever in the Guardian’s reasons why the new Attorney General should not be opposed ‘at the polls. Sir Wilfrid Laurier and his colleagues in the Dominion Cabinet were pot opposed when they went back to the people, because the Administration was at that time new and untried. Mr, McKinnon is, on the con- trary, the appointee of a party which has been tried and found wanting, notonly in principle and back-bone on the license question,—but in respect to the public deb and taxation, ‘‘making ends meet,” and th general administration of the affairs of the Province. There is little relationsh’p be-~ tween the cases cited by the Guardian and the case with which the people of Murrey Rarbor district have to deal; and The Guardian is forced to admit that “in tak- ing tbis action they are quite within their legal and constitutional rights,”
The Guardian says well, too, that “the Queen’s Government must be carried on.” This is true. And wheo the Attorney Genera! shall have been defeated and the present Administration forced to the wall as aresult thereof, the Queen’s Govern ment will be carried on by honest and prudent men.
