A. ¥ Phillips, an employe of the Southern Pacific Co.. now living in Tulare, went fishing sometime ago on the Bell River, in Mendocino county. Far up inthe hills, where the trout prevail, the stream courses along a

| comparatively level strip of country

for the distance of something like half a mile. With a friend he drove to thie spot, having previously arranged bait and lines and hooks. Mr. Phillips had thoughtfully collected an oyster can full of grasshoppers, to be used as bait in case the trout declined to accept the fly. Hecast in his tity-hook, but the wily gamesters did not appear to be hungry. To wake up the fish he drove the horse into the stream, the water being about knee deep, and cast in his line with a live hopper on the hook. No sooner had the hook struck the water than a trout seized it and was quickly landed in the buggy.

The sport was continued, driving up the stream, landing the trout in the buggy until the stock of hoppers was exhausted. When they ceased fishing they foundthey had 150 trout in the buggy, varying in length from six to ten inches.

This, Mr. Phillips says, was the best sport he ever enjoyed, and as the fish- ing season is at hand again he is going to take a lay-off and hunt that same trout spot.—San Francisco Call.

Kate Field and the John Brown Farm.

It was through the efforts of the late Kate Field that the John Brown home- stead and farm were preserved for the sake of their public interest. The place had been sold to some one dis- tantly connected with the family for $500 in about the year 1863, and in 1870 Kate Field found that it was about to be sold again. The public had seemed quite to forget the tomb of John Brown, andithad fallen into neglect. Miss Field secured a number of subscriptions of $100 each, and purchased the prop- erty. Her death and that of other members of this a*sociation which had bought the place, made it seem wise to devise some means for its permanent protection. It happens that the State of New York has within a few years acquired vast tracts in the Adiron- dacks with aview to preserving the forest and protecting the origins of im- portant water-courses. Much of the land in the general vicinity of the John Brown farm has become state prop- erty, and it has been necessary to pro- vide the requisite administrative organ- ization for the oversight of the state’s Adirondack domain. It was suggested, therefore, that it would be easy for the State of New York to care for the John Brown farm in connection with the great Adirondack reservation, and the Legislature last winter passed an Act enabling theexecutive department of the state Government to accept the farm and homestead from the John Brown Association. It was the forma] transfer from the association to the State that was the occasion of the celebration of July 21.—From “John Brown in the Adirondacks,” by Albert Shaw, in September Review of Re- views.

How Johnny Lost His Job.

Johnny McGraw was general utility boy about the office, drawing a stipend of $3 aweek. He managed, by frugal habits, tobuy « wheel on time, and had it partly paid for. His em loyer was considerate of Johnny, eiaaiae seofthe latter's newly acquired ap- purtenance of pleasure. He could easily have spared double the price of the bicycle, though he reasoned to him- self otherwise. Ill fared the office boy on this account, for the parsimonious employer used to wheel more than Johnny, who had to walk his errands, while the ‘‘boss,” procuring himself a bicycle suit, monopolized the wheel and wore out the tires, Johnny regis- tered a ‘‘kick”—and lost his job.—New Orleans Times-Democrat.

To Refresh the Fye.

If the eyes become tired and painful because of the bright sunshine on the sand and water try this method sug- gested by a physician, of assisting and refreshing them. Take a cup full of water and add sufficient salt to be faintly perceptible to the taste. Hold youreyes to the water so that your lashes touch it, then wink once, and the eyes will be suffused; do not wipe them. This so refreshes the eyes that they feel like a new pair, and they will be so strengthened that there will be little danger of those troublesome wrinkles forming about the eyes (while at the shore), because they are tired or overstrained.

The World’s Largest Organ.

The largest organ in the world is that in the Town Hall in Sydney, Australia. The internal width of this instrument is 80 feet, with a depth of 20 feet. It contains 126 stops, dig- tributed between five manuals, took three years to build, and cost $75,000, At the opening of this organ a dinner was given in the swell-box, at which ten persons, chiefly big-wigs of the music world, were present.

Mrs, Stowe’s Spirituai Life.

An American jourua! prints a letter written by Harriet Beecher Stowe shortly before her mental failure. Its chief value is in the suggestion that her withdrawal of mental power was a withdraaval into a flood of light behind the veil. (niookers, in many such cases, see the painful and pathetic side; but, as in death, the so-called “sufferer” is often drifting into light and peace; and, truly, if this is only illusion it is a very merciful and blessed illusion, and a good thing for us toknow. Here is the letter:—

“I am come to that stage of my pilgrimage that is within sight of the River of Death, and I feel that now I must have all in readiness day and night for the messenger of the King. I have sometimes had in my sleep strange perceptions of a vivid spiritual life near to and with Christ, and multitudes of holy ones; and the joy of it is like no other joy—it can not be told in the language of the world. What I have then I know with absolute certainty, yet it isso unlike and above anything we conceive of in this world that it is dificult to put it into words. The in- conceivable loveliness of Christ! It seems that about Him there is a sphere where enthusiasm of love is the calm habit of the soul, that without words, without the necessity of demonstra- tions of affection, heart beats to heart, soul answers soul, we respond to the infinite love, and we feel his answer in us, and there is no need of words.”

By the way, the article in this month’s ‘‘Atlantic Monthly” by her friend, Annie Field, gives many beau- tiful glimpses of her in the days of her “fading away.” She seemed, intruth, fading into sunshive. The brain had ‘almost ceased to act,” but, says Miss Field:—

“She has become ‘like a little child,’ wandering about, pleased with Howers, fresh air, the sound of a piano, ora voice singing hymns, but the busy, in- spiring spirit is asleep. Gradually she is fading away, shrouded in this strange mystery, hovered over by the untiring affection of her children, sweet and tender in her decadence, but ‘absent.’ ”
