SINGULAR, BUT TRUe.—The Maggie Dalling, | of this port, lately got ashore on the Bahamas, anc. still later met with another accident be- fore she reached her destination in the West India Islands. The caytain could not account for the vessel’s running ashore, until the secret was explained by some captains who had car- ried similer cargoes to that on board the Dal- ling. It appears she had cil in cans, and the captains said the iron contained in the cans was sufficient to seriously affect the compasses. This is said to be a fact not generally known by shipmasters.—Portlaid Press
