International Student Exchange Program

HELLO!!!!

Hi, my name is Janice Ployer and I am a Junior Sci- ence student majoring in math. This year I am also the Exchange Student/International Student Advisor. _My duties include working with the International/ Exchange students enroled at U.P.E.1. and also organ- izing future exchanges between U.P.E.I. and ottey universities.

Wecurrently have four university exchange options: University of Dundee (Scotland), University of South Florida, Muskingham College (South Carolina), and University of New Mexico. I am hoping to extend that number to give you as many alternatives as possible.

Many students believe that exchanges are only for the wealthy and are out of their reach. However, this is not the case. Anyone participating in an exchange pays regular U.P.E.I. tuition and residence fees fora double room. The only extra costs are a $100 regis- tration fee, travelling expenses, and of course, spend- ing money. Canada Studnet Loans and any U.P.E.I. scholarships or bursaries are still vail. So really, it

isnot much more expensive that going to school here in Charlottetown.

| Last year I participated in the exchange with Dundee

University. I had an excellent year not only experi- encing Scottish student life, but also getting to see quite a bit of Europe as well. Believe me, an exchange

is a great opportunity, one too good to pass. up. As In ternational Student Advisor, I am available to

help out with concerns any International students may have. One concern that has already been brought to my attention is the need for an Orientation program for International students when they first arrive for school. Most people don’t realize how difficult it is to travel to a foreign country, especially one ofa different life. The orientation program organizedat Dundee University was of great benefit to me, resolv- — ing problems before they arose. International stu- dents coming to U.P.E.I. deserve this same benefit.
