Items F’rom Souris.

The breaking cf the breakwater would be an undesirable calamity. Report says it is showing signs of premature old age, and as ‘a matter of fact, in some parts it is becom- ‘ing shaky enough to require the fatherly care of the Government.

There is joy among fishermen. Now and then the mackerel land in such quantities that the uninitiated might imagine they jumped at the hook just for the fun of being caught. We must, however, take bitter with the sweet—all day yesterday did not give catch enough to feed an ordinary family.

The ‘‘jawbreakers” which your corres- pondent gave vent to in his last, have resulted disastrously. The young gentle- man Who was called a “heavy swell” in recent notes, now laughs with glee at the sweet possession of a brother, and actually asked ‘‘Lancaster’ the other day who’s ithe heavy swell now—shake hands! Mus- ;quitos and toothaches act about the same sometimes.

On the 3rd inst., a son of Mr. Duncan McLeod, of Dundas, while playing with some schoolmates, fell and broke his arm near the elbow; and on Sunday last, Mr. Richerd Dingwell, son of the Hon, James D:ngwell, while out driving in company with his wife, (only recently married) met with a very serious and painful accident. His horse shied and run a wheel of the wagon up on a stump, resulting in Mr. Dingwell being thrown violently to the ground, and we are sorry to say that he suffered serious injury from an intensely painful compound fracture. © His right leg 1s broken about half way between the knee and ankle, ‘The horse got clear, and Mrs, Dingwell providentially escaped injury by climbing over the back of the wagon. Dr. Muttart is attending both cases just men- tloned.

Not being very well able to do anything else for a few days past your correspondent has roamed round upon land and water, seeking ease and diversion in change of scene. Just at this time of the year when the sun is in all his glory, and earth greets him with a smile—happy reflection— nature seems decked in her most radiant beauty. Lovely stretches of shore nestle sweetly here and there amid the frowning cliff, and the waters rush merrily over the glistening sands; like a sea of diamonds scattered amidst a field of pearls. In Rollo Bay there are striking scenes which reminds one pleasurably of some passages in Longfellow’s ‘‘Evangeline.” By the way, as | have mentioned the much loved poet's name, I cannot do better than copy for your readers a letter from his pen (hitherto unpublished) which a gentleman placed in my hands a few days ago :-—

| The wreck on the shores of Nova Scotia ‘(referred to above) was that of the ‘‘Hay py Home,” lost only a few years ago. It car- ried sorrow into many families, among [aon that of Deacon John McDonald.

Notes from the East.

The weather has been very unfavorable for hay-making, but farmers are busy cut- jting and watching the clouds. Never was |there so many eyes turned heavenward jthan at present.

| The bear has been visiting us again and i tithing the flocks. H» visited Mr. John \Campbell’s ranch a few nights ago and took agreat fancy to two choice bleaters, so much so that he secured them regardless of cost. The neighbors turned out fully prepared to settle with Mr. Bruin, but Mr. B., not being prepared for an intervicw with ten heavy shot guns, breakfasted early end took the 6 o’clock train and went out Jest.

The crops are looking excellent, anc the anxious husbandman is ‘‘looking hopes | fully.”

The catch of Blue Backs around the East Point has been very good, last week some boats took 2,000 in one day, the prospect of a large catch and good prices, are mak- ing the deserving fishermen feel happy, (success to them.)

The potate bug has not arrived yet, but the country is infested with peddlers.

THe Examiner is becoming more popu- lar every day, and is eagerly sought after Ly every lover of news.

We are stil] living in hopes of our Branch Railway.

The Markets.

We have not much change to note since our report of last week. Filcur here is in light supply notwithstanding that importa- tions to date must have been heavier than for any previous year. We hear good ae- counts of the Island wheat crop, and it is to be hoped that.in another year we will not require to import so much flour. We have not seen any figures but we roughly esti- mate the flour bill of the Province for the year at a quarter of a million dollars.

In Montreal quotations for flour are without change since last report. Cheese is quoted at 94 to 99 cents.

TORONTO MARKETS. Toronto, Aug. 7.

Flour—-Superior, $4.80; Extra $4.70.

Bran $10.00 to $10.50.

Butter quiet at lic. Market unchanged.

Flour wanted at quotations for guaran- teed, but none offered.

W heat steady; No. 2 spring sold at $1.10 but nothing doing in other grades.

Oats firm; cars held at 43 cents, with buyers at 42 cents,

Burrer.—Good to fine packages at 14c to l6c; and inferwr lots at 12¢ to 13e.

Woot —Quotations are 1%¢ to 20c for good quality.

Fisu. —Our Boston fish report is as fol- lows:—Late reports from our shore mack- erel fleet show slight improvement in catch of fish. Trade, however, is active and dealers take them as fast as they come to hand. Nova Scotia mackerel are selling at $10 for 2’s, #9 for large 3's, and &} to 84 for medium 3's. Receipts of these fish in- creasing. InP. E. Island we quote large at $14; medinm, $10; unculled $94 to $11. Proepect for future arrivals is gvod, Large shore split herrings are selling at $5 to 54; Bay Fundy gibbed, $3.50 to $3.76; Dal- housie gibbed, $2 50, Trade is well sup- plied and market quiet. Box herrings in fair demand. at $29 for mediums, and $24 to $25 for 1's.
