Maine shipbuilding does not prosper. The total tonnage built for the last three years is as follows; 1877, 76,398 ; 1878, 41,050 ; 1879, 35,416.

Tux Revenve.—The total revenue of an increase over December, last year, of one hundred and fifty-three thousand dollars.

The National Zeitung publishes a sensa- tional statement to the etiect that, in view of the differences between Austria and Ser- vie, Russia has formally engaged to protect the latter.

The Emporor William, in replying to con- gratalations of the Municipality of Berlin expressed himself of the hope that, with the blessing of the Almighty, his efferts may succeed in securing peace for Germany.

The Grand Trunk managers are experi- menting with the electric light in their workshops at Montreal. There are over 1,000 men employed in these shops now, aud the capacity of the works is severely tested.

The Grand Trunk Railway officials have issued an order that in the shipment of lumber a short car shall not contain to ox- ceed 20,000 lba., anda long car 24,000 lbs. Any excess over these weights will be charged fer.

Referring to the Imbriani affair, a Vienna letter says: ‘‘Nobody suspects any real intention on the part of Italy to pick a quarrel with Austria, but the'matter excites distrust which, in the long ran, must tell on the relations of the two States.”

Tue Winnipec ‘‘ Times.”—Ounur enter: prising daily contemporary at Winnipeg, Manitoba, began the new year and its third volume with a new departure. Hereafter the J'imes, which is a lsrge 32 column news- paper, will issue a full sized double sheet every Saturday, making it the largest daily in Canada, with one exception. The 7'imes deserves to meet with abundant euccess.

In the Lower. House of the Prussian Diet the Minister of Finance, in asking 4 vote for the relief of the sufferers by the famine in Upper Silesia, announced that the Gov- ernment also contemplated the construction of two. branch railway lines in Silesia, which would require a grant of 12,500,000 marks (about $2,125,000.) He said that 106,000 persons at present needed relief, and that provision fer these had been made up to the end of the month ; the govern- ment, he said, heping to effeet lasting im- provements by extensive drainage worke and the promotion of local industries.

The situation is thus surveyed by the Berlin correspondent of the Standard : The advent of winter netwithstanding, fortifica- tions are being rapidly constructed every- where. Rugsia is building half a dozen new fortsat lvangored, in Peland. Frances has commenced the erection of French forts at Maubeuge, Lille and Dunkirk—all on the Belgian frontier. Prussia sees the strategical necessity of adding another set of metals to the Mosselle Railway. Aus- tria fortities the Alpine Passes against Italy. Holland is perfeeting her inundation sys- tem. Denmark discusses the protection of Copenhagen from the land side, and Bel- gium has increased her army to 100,000 men.

The most remarkable case amongst the invalids from Zoaluland was that of a sol- dier present at Ulundi, who, when the Zu- lus faltered, and the cavalry were filing out to charge them, was, with many of his com: rades of the infanty line, cheering lustily and waving hia hat close by Lord Chelms- ford, when he suddenly threw up his arms and fell. Some Zulus were still keeping up a desultory tire, and a ball had passed in through his open mouth and through the back of his neck. The teeth were untouch- ed, the jaw was fractured, none of the large blood vessels were injured, but the ball had passed so near them that it was in reality a practical. hairbreadth escape. The patient is so far recovered as to be active and live- ly, but whether he will be fit for further service remains doubtful.

Two of the regiments now ferming part of the field force serving in Afghanistan (says the Army and Navy Gazetie), have had aw unusually long spell of peaceful times, viz ; the 20th Kings own Borderers, who hare not fired a shot in anger for the list 70 years, (since they were at the taking of Martinique in 1809), and the 85th Kings Light Infantry, who nave not been under fire since the battle of New Orleans, in January, 1815. The 15th Foot seem des- tined to retain their sobriquet ef the ‘* peace-makers,” not having been before an enemy since the taking of Surinam, seventy-five years ago. Besides the above mentioned corps, the following regiments have not faced an enemy siice Waterloo, viz. :--the Household Cavalry, the oth Lan- cers, ahd the four junior Hussar Regi-

Mr. Dugald MacEachran, sugar refiner, has intimated his intention to present a gymnasium to Greenock.

The number of cattle despatched from Aberdeen to the London Christmas market was this year 2,077, or 137 fewer than last year, and the sheep were 44 fewer.

The returus of the shipping engaged in Clyde and foreign trade for the month of Nevember show a considerable improve- ment, there being 13,000 tons in the arrivals more than in November last year.

A deep feeling of discontent prevails among the hitherto submissive aud well-be- haved crofters and tenant farmers of Resy county, owing to the great and unlooked for rise on their rents of from 20 to 50 per cent.

A Town Hall, containing separate sets of municipal chambers for the burghs of Gov- anhill and Crosshill, has been handed over free of cost to the magistate, by W. 5. Dixon, of the Govan Ironworks. The building cost £20,000.

Edward Majorbanks has presented tiie Dunse Curling Club with a silver tea ket- tle, to be competed for amongst the mem- bers of that club, and the club generally gave it to be competed for by the represen- tatives of the curling clubs in Berwickshire.

While soize of the employes of Forrest, Frew & Co. were at work recently on the banks of the Clyde, near Ruthergien Bridge, they discovered a British canoe, made from a solid trunk of oak. The ais- covery is regarded by antiquarians «as of great interest.

The tenantry of the Duke of Richmond in the upland district of the Cabrach have drawn up a memorial, thanking his Grace for postponing the rent day from Martin- mas till Ist of March, but representing that, so great have been their losses through past bad harvests, and so deep is their present distress, further measures of relief will be needed to meet their diffi- eulty.
