West opened the diamond king and. on East's play of the ten, ccn- tinued with the diamond ace. De- clarer rulfed and then gave thought to the best plan of attack. He felt absolutely sure about one thins~tlmt if he led clubs in nny ordinary way he wvould lose three tricks in the suit, since the tid- dlng had virtually guaranteed that the club ace lay over the king. So South looked around for a more propitious plan-and he soon found one.

South led the trump eight to dummys nine and ruffed vamther diamond. Now. since he could not yet afford to fake out the rest o! the trumps, he had to risk laying down all three of the hearts. When these went through. as thev figured to. the trump king was overtaken with the ace. and South was de- cidedly pleascd that the two out- standing trumps fell thus making it possible to leave a trump; in dummy for a vital purpose. For now dummy's last diamond was led and. instead of ruftlng. decluzer c-ooly threw c-ff a club, perfeczlv willing to give this trick to West.

Obviously West was now “fixed? If he were to lead another dia- mond. dummy would rut! while ce- clarer got rid of n second club; whereas on West's actual lead of a. club. South's king was establish- ed for the fullfilling trick
