lot the other members of the Pro- lvincial ll.-gislature, visited the - National Employment Office in the inew Federal Building, last even- ing, on the invitation of the local ioffice staff. For most of them it was their first visit to th e Employment Office. and they were very pleased with its appearance and its all around facilities. Mem- bers of the office staff answered questions relative to the Employ- ment Branch and to the work be- ing carried on in the Insurance Branch.

The Premier mingled freely and , asked a number of questions about ithc various departments of the office. iVlr. W.S. MacLcod. talked to one interested group about the various methods of handling appli- cants for employment. and Mr.

G.W. Ciievcrie head of the Insur- ance Branch. explained some of the functions of his branch which includes the payment of benefit claims.

The whole office staff was on hand for the occasion including a number of workers who are em- ployed as casual help during the winter months.

Before the members left to at- tend a meeting, they were served light refreshments by the lady members of the National Employ- ment Offlce. The refreshments were served in the board room which was tastefully prepared for the occasion. The table was decor- ated with sliamrocks in deference to St. Patrick's day. with a golden harp as the centrepiece of the decorations, and a touch of green in evidence thmughout.

Debaters Are Kiwanis Club Luncheon Guests

l The weekly luncheon meeting of the Kiwanis Club was held Tuesday with Someried Trainor as chair- man. Minutes were read by th e secretary. Mr. Richard. and the treasurer. Al Rogers. presented a detailed financial statement show- ing a substantial balance in club finances. The report was en- thuslastlcaliy adopted by the mem- bers. Mr. Rogers aleogave a short account of the progress made in the white elephant sale.

Guests of Kiwanis were Rev. F.L. Cass. St. Dunstan's debating coach. and the St. Dunstan's team of Donald MacDougal lof Bloom- field, P..El. and Leo Peddle of Comer Brook. Nfld.. who won the Canadian University debating championship.

Gentleman in his sermons. some of the remarks by Father Cass in his short talk to the club seemed to cast some doubt as to the veracity of Mr. Tratlnor's claim. The humorous address was greatly enjoyed by the members. Mr. Leo F. MacDonald expressed to the three guests the club's ap- preciation for their attendance and added words of commendation.

Wllf Smith led in singing "When Irish Eyes are Smlling" and Byron Grant rendered a pelasing solo. The meeting closed with the Queen.

On Saturday. March 9th. the Cube, Scouts, and leaders of both H01! " ”eemer and Pnrkdale Scout groups presented their an- nual variety show to a packed house at the Community Centre.

The first half of the show con- nisted of various skits and stunts by the Scout and Cuba. The sec- ond half took the form of a min- Itnl show.

Among the selections that were heartily encorcd by the audience were solos by the and men. Retarded Children Association Meets

The regriar monthly meeting of the Prince Edward Island As- sociation for Retarded Children was held at West Kent School on Monday March 11 at 8 p.m. The meeting was opened with prayer.

Mr. Plus Smith gave a report on the activities of his Commit- tee which has been formed to pro- mote interest in forming a local association for retarded children in Summerslde. Mr. Smith inform- ed the meeting that Dr. H. B. Mac- Neill of Summerside, had been of great assistance and had distribu- ted n circular letter to the ser- vice clubs and clergy of Summe - aide.

Mr. Smith also reported that the Liberty Magazine in now pre- paring an article designed to in- form tts readers about the won- derful ectivities of Canadian Le- gion posts through Canada and giving special attention to the Charlottetown day training class for retarded children. which is sponsored by the Charlottetown branch of the Canadian Legion.

The meeting noted with much interest Honourable A. .W. Mathe- son's remarks in his draft speech regarding a home for the mental- ly retarded. The West Prince Association for Retarded children has been recently fonned with Mr. Lloyd Matthews as president.

Mr. St. John president, report- ed that he and Mrs. A. M. John- ston had attended a Gyro meet- ing held March 4. Mrs. Johnston addressed the meeting. The Gyro membe. indicated interest and understanding in the problems fa- cing the mentally retarded.

It was felt by the Association that they must make a concentra- ed effort to interest the service clubs and other organizations in the need for an lnsttutton or training school for the mentally retarded. It was decided to hold a "White Elephant" sale on Mar. fl. with Mrs. Charles smith as convener. -

Education Means to Me."

The large audience were pleas- ed to have the occasion to extend sincere congratulations to the St. F Dominion Championship Debating Team which wu intro- duced by the Faculty Moderator, Rev. F. Cass. The debaters spoke briefly and outlined the highlights of their trip to Ottawa. The two etude n were pieeented with suit- able gifts by Mr. John Danton. President of the Rochford Square School Home and School Associa- tion.

PANEL

The higlight of the meeting was a refreshing and impromptu ex- pression of opinions on various phases of education by a panel consisting of Rev. Father Arsen- ault. Mrs. Bernard Hughes. Dr. John Mnloney and Professor Jam- es Coyle. Acting as M.C. for the panel was Dr. J. A. McMillan who provoked spirited discussions in the presenting of a number of con- troversial questions and quotat- ions on present educations. trends.

Remarks of appreciation on be- half of the audience were present- ed by Judge St. Clair Tralnor, Mrs. Arthur MacGuignn and Mr. K. A. Parker, Superintendent of City Schools.

This was considered by all pres- ent as one of the best Home and School meetings attended this year. The whole-hearted interest and support by the parents con- cerned is indicative of the public in- terest in the important field of education.

Five Children Burned To Death In Alberta Fire

GUNN. Alta. (CP)-Five chil- dren were burned to death Tues- day when ftre destroyed their one- room cabin near this community about 40 miles northwest of Ed- monton. The mother Is in serious condition in hospital.

Dead are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Kelsey. They were identified by police as Er- nest. 8. Vlona. 6. Marilyn. 5, Wayne, 4. and Lawrence Jr.. 2.

The victim's father is an oil worker in the Drnyton Valley. about 00 miles Iouthwent of Ed- monton. He was not at home at the time.

Police said the mother ran naked half a mile for help after belng unable to exttngulsh the flames. She was badly burned when she arrived at the home of George Elke. a neighbor. from where she was taken to hospital in Edmonton.

The family had lived in the home for the last two years.

"I think this is a fairly substan- tial number. Are we going to in- crease it? Are we going to change our Act. What is the will of the House? What is the will of the Province?” asked Mr. Large.

"This is the record of steps leading to separate schools," said Mr. Large. "Much as these things have been honoured with a closed eye in the past. the time has come when it must be taken out into the light of public debate. Many of these facts have been glazed over." he said.

Mr. Large said the fact that 100 permits are granted each year was a serious matter. The fact that the national turnover in teacher personnel is only eight per cent compared to 20 per cent on Prince Edward Island was also noted.

He said the regional high chools were a far cry from what a regional high school should be. He noted that one teacher w as teaching all of the subjects in grade X1 or XII which was not the case in Charlottetown.
