The nutrition of the school child is a sub- ect of much controversy at the PIESBHIIIIMC. he school lunch program, ff" emmPlei '5 m‘ ceiving careful study in Canada today. Thore- gye these who go so far as to propose that d complete meal be provided at noon for_eWI‘Y school child. Others, keenly interested in the nutrition of the pupllrflfflli ‘Qlmlel? ‘Mamie of methods of determining which children re- quire supplementary feeding before voicing an opinion. Such evidence is not available at pres- ent. However, a study which will give this typs of‘ information is now in Pmglfissr The Red Cross Society has sponsored this research pro- ject for a period of two years. Somelsrx hun- dred school children have been paired into con- trol and experimental groups and for two years the experimental group is to receive a complete meal at noon. The children have received num- erous tests, both physical and mental, and all phases of the study have been discussed thor- qughly by specialists from Great Britain, the United States and Canada. Although much of the information which has been gathered and presented is concerned "our. the feeding of the school child, some at- tention hos been given to the teaching of Nutri- tion. One of the factors which has received recognition is the extent to which Canada's Ol- ficial Food Rules are used in the teaching. These food rules were prepared by the Division of Nutrition, Department of National Health, an:l distributed widely throughout the Dominion. They read as follows: Eat them every day. Drink plenty of water. l. MILK--Adults, 1-2 to 1 pint. Children, l l-2 pints to l quart. 2. FRUIT-One serving of cit- rus fruit or tomatoes or their juices; and one serving of ‘other fruit.

(ll That a school lunch program be argon- llod to provide at least one nutritious dish, the ultimate objective of such a program to be the provision of a complete lunch.

(2) That milk be provided for all children

{who do not get sufficient milk at home.

l3) That the attention of provincial Depart- ments of Education and Health be directed to studios of nutrition being conducted by the Canadian Red Cross and by the Nutrition Div- ision of the Department of National Health and Welfare.

The excerpts from the address of Judge Trainor to the City Hospital nurles, published in yesterday's issue, are worthy of careful read- ing, and the advice acted upon. ln addition to giving a comprehensive summary of nursing and its close association with religion, he animod- verted on the present-day tendency of parents to leave their homes in the evening and allow their children to parade the streets with the result of getting into bad company, or at least of developing bad habits. He said in this con- nection: ‘l

"The home, the very base of the nation, once the centre of social life and the very protector rind teacher of the young is, today, but a place to eat and sleep, and for many not even thiit. Accost the child on the street at on hour for past his bed time and ask him, as l have done, why he is not home in bed, and you will be told, as l have been told, that there is no one home to cars for them, all are awoy at the show. Yes, parents away from home at the show while their young boys and girls roam about the streets un- protected and uncontrolled. ls there any wonder that ws have juvenile delinquents in our midst?"

Most of us, in the larger centres at any rate, can indorse those remarks, and social workers and others interested in the maintenance of law and order will appreciate such criticism coming from a Judge of the County Court.

it is encouraging, and significant, to find Ontario newspapers warmly indorsing Mr. John R. MacNiclioVs plea in Parliament for mars considerate treatment of the Maritime Prov- inces. Mr. MacNichol-himself an Ontario in-

point programme for the Maritimes: expansion of electrical production and rural electrifica- tion; elimination of trade-impeding bottle-necks which tend to cut the Maritime Provinces off fromcno another and from the rest of Canada; iind expansion of the primary and secondary in- dustries of the region.

The program works out to an expenditure of $100,000,000 over a 20-year period and in- cludes a bridge across the Straits of Canso, a l9-mils canal across the Chignecto peninsula,and better connections between_ Prince Edward ls- lond and the mainland.

Latest commendation of Mr. MacNichoYs programme comes from the London Free Press, which says: "Anything that would improve the economic condition of. the Maritimes would re- lieve Canada of a considerable burden. Mr. MacNichol does not propose to subsidize the Maritimes, but to help them to help themselves. His proposal deserves the mast careful study, and should not be filed in a bureaucratic pigeon- hole."

That, unfortunately, is what has happened too often in the past.

Six years ago on May 24, i941, the British battle cruiser Hood was sunk y the German battleship Bismarck in an engagement off Greenland. A long range shot found o vital spot and touched off the Hood's magazines. When she blew up with the loss*of practically all hands the British Navy suffered its heaviest single blow since the start of the war and one that could not go unavenged. Every available ship including the King George V, the Rodney, the Ramillies, the Renown and the Ark Royal were sent to join the hunt for the raider. At 10:30 o.m. on May 26, torpedo carrying planes sighted the Bismarck and damaged her steer- ing gsar in a series of attacks. Tho bay is situated on the nor-sh side of Prince Edward Island and almost midway between its eastern and western extremities. It is also nearly midway between Rustico Bay on the east: and Malpcque Bay an the west.
