Stewart's Fate and Gordon’s Heroism.

A London correspondent writes: We have hed a painful sensation in the news of Col. Stewart’s murder. This fact helps also to keep alive the public excitement. There is meanwhile a sharp revival of jeremiads in the tory papers over Khar- toum, and the reports that Mahidi is now ready to march give color to the fears that Gen. Gordon will not be able to hald out. The difficulty of transport on the Nile are unquestionably great. Steamers are break- ing their cranks, hawsers are giving way, and boats are capsizing. It is said that the saddles for the camel corps, being made of green wood, are splitting already, and much trouble is anticipated in the work of re- placing them. Gen. Gordon's exploits have made him the hero of all Europe, and the whole continental press is filled with praise of him. His work is always put in contrast with the bungling im- potency of the general English policy. It is said now that there was more truth than a little in the Times’ recent

His practical sagacity, his brilliant talents, his cautious statesmanship, his unfailing pru- dence were laid under tribute to advance the interests of this college. He stood by it loyally in its days of weakness, and to hia wise counsels is due much of its strength to-day. Generations to come will, we trust, point to the progress of Dalhousie

Coliege as one of the best results of Sir Wm. Young’s long and useful hfe. The board rejoice that they do not need to part with their honored

chairman as one of the governors of the college, and they have to express their earnest wish that he may be spared in dealth and comfort to see the increasing prosperity of the college. They would also most respectfully and earnestly solicit his continued interest in an institution on whose behalf he has labored so long, so faithfully and so successfully, with which his name is so honorably identified, and which, while promising to be increasingly useful in the future, has already conferred inestimable benefits on the community.

The Toronto Globe in a recent issue resurrected the old question of confedera- tion, and declared that it had damaged Toronto in its wholesale and retail trade and done almost nothing for its manufac- tures,”

The Halifax Recorder, as violent an oppo- sition sheet in Nova Scotia as the Globe is in Oatario, attacks confederation with equal bitterness but from a totally different reason. It says :—

At every railway station in the province if Nova Scotia on any fine day may be found numerous packages of goods—agri- cultural implements, leather findings, flour, and scores of other commodities. A glance at the labels on them shows that in most cases they come from Ontario.

Both agree in decrying the union of the provinces; they are as wide asunder as the poles in the reasons assigned. The Globe assert that it has done nothing for Ontario manufactures and trade; the Recorder's complaint is that Ontario manufactures are flooding the province of Nova Scotia.

Two converted Chinesewomen brought out by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions to teach in the mission school at San Francisco, were refused permission to land because they were ot provided with the certificate required by law.

Hart County, Ga., boasts of a resident only thirty-five years old who has married three wives inside of eighteen mouths. The first wife died, and in two months he married again. The second wife lived only a few months, and a few days ago he mar- ried a third.

The right hon, Geo. J. Dodson, chan- cellor of the duchy of Lancaster, has been created a peer. He will be succeeded by Mr. Trevelyan, chief secretary for Ireland, with a seat in the cabinet. Campbell Bannerman, secretary to the Admiralty, has been appointed chief secretary for Ireland.
