The shortage of qualified lea- rners seems to be the biggest problem in education today ac- rording to opinions expressed at a meeting of the Prince Ed- uard island Home and School Association which was address- ed last night by Mrs. Margaret (owan. chairman of the commit- tee on recruitment and retention. National Federation Home and School Association from Van- rouver. B.C. The meeting took place at room 66, Prince of wales College. Mr. Reg. Mac- hiitt presided.

Following Mrs. Cowan's re- marks in which she presented some of the major problems con- fronting education, a general discussion took place in which almost all of those present took part.

it was stated that these grants and loans were made to any student expressing his or her intention of taking the normal training. with no thought being given to the student's academic standing. It was asserted that many of those who apply for the T.T. course were those who had not fully qualified in their acad- emic course.

Arkansas Governor Strikes Back At The Federal Gov't ,

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. fCPl- Arkanas Governor Orval E. Faubus. taking the offensive,

struck back at the federal gov- ernment Thursday with two last- minute legal actions. lie acted in advance of today's crucial court hearing on his use of the state militia to bar Negroes from a Little Rock high school.

First. he refused to honor a federal subpoena summoning him to court as a defendant in a suit involving four recently - passed Arkansas segregation laws. The suit later was shelved until state courts rule on it.

A few hours later. his law- yers moved to disqualify U.8. District Judge Ronald Davies- scheduled to hear the case to- day-on grounds that Davies is prejudiced against Faubus.

Davies himself will have to rule on the motion to disqualify.

The sale of the Charlottetown Patriot to the Thomson Company Limited was announced yester- day by W.A. Gaudet. president and general manager of the Fat- riot Publishing Company. Thus the paper which traces its his- tory back to 1851. will in future be published by the Thomson Company Ltd. which acquired The Guardian in l95.'l.

It was about 1904 that he fookl the job of selling subscriptions in the country and he travelled over is large portion of the prov- ince on a bicycle selling indivi- dual subscriptions. Possibly it was this pedslling that built up the powerful leg muscles that carried him to many triumphs vln his favorite sport of speed skating.

Iilr. Gaudet recalls that thei paper had only some 400 paid. up subscribers when he started selling subscriptions. in addition! to that he played the major rolel IQ building up the paper from a5 business standpoint. .

In 1906 he was made subscrip-p tion manager of the paper and was appointed business manager several years later.

It was after the death of F.J. Nash in 1929 that hit". Gaudet became general manager of the paper and he was lnade Presi- dent of the Patriot Publishing Company in 1955 and retained the title of General Manager.

It was under his administrat- ion that the paper introduced mechanical setting and purchas- ed two monoline machines to replace hand setting.” These were replaced in time by a couple of linotypes and these two machines were still in use. along with five more mod- ern ones. when the disastrous fire wiped out the plant several weeks ago.
