At daybreak at Sakhalin—you could hardly see daybreak on account of the shutters—one of the ugliest looking women lever saw crept in witha cup of tea that is always given in Asia very early in the morning, and she was a murderess. I went to the little tent out- side to have breakfast, and a man came up behind me and reached over my shoulder, and he was a murderer. When | we rode out after breakfast, a man with magnificent broad shoulders and splen- did face drove, and he was a murderer. The fact is, strange as it may seem, they (the governor and Russian officers at Sakhalin) have no choice. All the domestics must come from the material they have, and if you take a thief he is almost always sure to stay a thief, while @ murderer may be a very nice kind of a person. They did that kind of thing among themselves, and I don’t want any better men than some of those that were sent there for murder.—Bulletin Amer- icen Geographical Society.

A Gallant Thief.

A woman in Londen recently had Wer pocket picked, one of the articles being a sealed and unaddressed envelope, con- taining a £5 note. The next day she re- ceived back the stolen articles, with the following explanatory note:

DEAR Mapam—The exigencies of my profes- sion led me just now into possession of your purse, where I find 60 shillings, which 2 appro- priate to my own meeds, and these papers, which I return to rou. I do this because 1 feel especially desirous to restore this little white envelope, which I have not been indiscreet enough to open. £ know very well that when @ young woman gees out with a little white envelope so carefully carried in herpocketbook that this envelope contains a love letter which she is seeking a chance to address secretly to her beloved, I will not wrong your lover by taking the sweet words and kisses which you meant for him, and I am very sorry that I have even for a short time delayed his receiy- ing his letter. May you be happy, dear girl, with him whom you have chosen, and believe always in the good wishes of wsur obedient servant.

In the secoud heat of the half-mile bicycle, Picton Brown weut over the bank and damaged his wheel so badiy that be had to ride a strange one in the subse- quent events in which he figured. But he gave a splendid account ot himself under the circumstancss, and in the fiveemile race was (nly defeated by Mitchell by a tew feet,

Ivan McKinnon, aCharlottetown boy won the two-mile handicap from Dick Mitchell by a Short distance. In this event W. F. Mitchell, Sellar and Gaudet, were thrown from their wheels when the race was nearly finished, and Mitchell had one of his .ega slightly injared.

Sir Charles Tupper and Lady Tupper arrived at Sydney, C. B., on Wednesday evening, and were met atthe station ly a large number of citizens, who rejoiced to have the opportunity of bidding them wel- come. The Sydney Cornet band played ep-~ propriate airs at the train and io front of the.hotel. Crowds tbronged the streets and waited anxiously both to see and hear hima.
