and its vicinity, on my appointment to the Government _of this Colony, demands the expression of my warmest thanks, which I beg you to accept.

The assurance of your devoted attachment to the per- son of onr illustrious Queen, and of your appreciation of the blessings secured to you by our inestimable Constitution, gives me very great pleasure, and affords me confidence and encouragement in the discharge of the important duties which have devolved upon me, as Her Majesty’s Representative; and if, in the faithful performance of these duties, ! shall succeed in my anxious desire to promote the happiness and_ prosperity of the people committed to my charge, my success will prove my highest reward, and will, I trust, secure the approbation of our beloved Sovereign.

ELECTIONS IN CANADA.

Some of the Electionsin Canada had commenced. A, “strong opposition to the Liberal Candidates for the City or Quebec was threatened by the Conservatives up to the day of nomination, when the courage of the latter ap-

ars to have oozed out of the palms of their hands—and Weise. Aylwin and Chabot were declared duly elected.

We observe that the Hon. Louis J. Papineau, ex Speaker of the Lower Canada Assembly, has offered for Huntingdon and Samt Maurice. Mr. P. comes forward as a supporter of the Ex Ministers. The City of Montreal represented in the late Parliament by Conservatives, promised to send two Liberals. Up to the date of our last advices, the Government party had not been able to induce any person of character to risk a contest. The Quebec Gazatte (Ministerial) says‘ That there are only two Candidates forthe City of Montreal. There appears to be much division among the so called Conservatives.’ And to make matters still worse, we are informed by the same paper that one of the aklest of the Conservative Journals, ‘ the Montreal Herald has come out decidedly against the adininistration, and the Courier laments that the state of the Revenue has not enabled the Ministers to satisly all expectants.

It would appear also, that the prospects of the Ministerialists in Upper Canada are not much more promising, for even ‘f'oronto, so long the head quarters of cliques and compacts, is likely to be wrested from them. In that city, we quote again from the Gazette, ‘all is confusion worse confounded’—and the Globe, Liberal paper, says:

The day of deliverance of the Capital of Western Canada from the dominion of its Tory oppressors is at hand. T'oronto—hitherto in the hands of a Clique of office holders, destitute of every popular or equitable) principle, is about to be emancipated from her thraldom. |

Four Candidates have appeared ;—Mr. BouJton and Mr. |

Sherwood, the present members; Mr. Donald Bethune, Steam Boat Proprietor, and Mr. James Beaty, mer- chant. The clection of a genuine Liberal for ‘Toronto, has been for some years despaired of, but the citizens are about to give a demonstration that it is to be so no

longer. T’o throw out Mr. Boulton will be a great) triumph—to throw out Mr. Sherwood, the Prime|"e an nD:

Minister for Upper Canada will be a greater—to throw both out will be better still.
