* The Thirteen Club.

What is known asa Thirteen Ciub was organized in New York about two years ago. Its object was to combat the absurd superstitious delusion as to the unluckiness of thirteen people sit-) (ing down to dinner. At 8.13 in the evening of Friday, January 13 last, the Club sat down to dinner in room 13 of a house, the street number of which was 454—13 if these figures are added together. Everything was in thirteens. To enter the room they passed under a ladder of 13 rungs. The old American flag with 13 stars hung over the chair- man’s head. There were 13 juts of gas. The bill of fare was printed on a paste- board coffin lid, adorned with 13 gilt nailheads) The membership of the club in this its third year of existance is 338, that is twice thirteen times thirteen. No13th of a month has passed without at least any party of thirteen meeting together at a table, And how about the casualties? asked the

superstitious reader, Thus far no member bas died within the allotted year. One member died fifteen months

after his last dinner at the club; one ex-member who never attended a dinner died, and Peter Cooper, an honorary member who never attended at dinner, also died. The Thirteens always take care to spill salt on the table, they wear the motto “Morituri te Salutamus,” and go journeying on
