The steamer Walla Walla, ofg San Fran- cisco, plying to Puget Sound was seized by customs officers for omitting proper entries of freight on her inward manifests. She carried four barrels supposed to contain sauer kraut, which were taken through to

Tacoma without being entered on the custom record. The freight list at

Tacoma indicated the barrels came from San Francisco consigned to Elienburg. Shortly afterward the barrels were found to contain opium, valued at $1,000. The barrels were put on board the steamer at Victoria, and subsequently taken through to Tacoma. The penalty for the false entry is $1,000. Tacoma custom officers think that many hundred thousand dollars worta of opium has been smuggled in this manner.

The storm last evening damaged Brad- ley’s board walk to the extent of $3,000. At Long Branch the sea cut 30 feet into Ocean Avenue, in front of Howland Hotel. At Mongrath Beach the foundations of several cottages were washed away. At Highland Beach the track of the New Jer- sey southern division of the Central Rail- way was torn up nearly a mile. Heavy stones from the sea walis were swept upon the station platfurm. Three feet of sand cover the tracks for halia mile. ‘The loss is estimated at $50,000. .
