The Boston Post reporis that the sons of fair Harvard who claim Canada as the land of their birth, united at the Vendome Hotel to help swell the festivitiss in honoe f the gallant British tars and Her Majesty’s natal day. Thedinner at the Vendome was given by the Harvard Canadian Club, which is composed of Canadians attending the college. About sixty memders of the club sat down to the tables with their in- vited guests. The gnesta were Com- mander Bayly, of the Blake, Lieutenant Cooper-Key of the Tartar, the British vice cousul, Mr. Siewart, Professors Norton, De Sumichrast and Wendell of Harvard, J. A. Gordon, British army.

Lettera of regret were read from Admiral Hopkins, Captain Hamilton, of the Blake, Commander Fleet, President Eliot, Dean Briggs, the Hon. E. J. Hodgson, and President Schurman, of Cornell.

President F. J. McLeod presided and was toastmaster. Toasts were drunk to the Queen of England and the President of the United States and “our country.” Commodore Bayly and Mr. Gordon re- sponded to the toast, “The Army and Navy.” Professors Wendell and Norton responded to “Harvard,” Lieut. Cooper- Key and Henry Sandham to “Our Guests.”

OBITUARY. It becomes our painful duty to announce the sudden demise of Lucy MelIntyre, be- loved wife of A. McKinnon, Brackley Point, and third daughter of the late Jobn MelIntyre, of Savage Harbor, which sad event occurred at her late home on the 23rd of May, in the 43rd year of her age Deceased enjoyed good health until the 18th inst., when she contracted inflamma- tion of the lungs, which, despite medical aid, terminated as above stated. During her sojourn in Brackley Point, she endear- ed herself to all by her kind and amiable disposition. She bore her illness with Christian fortitude and resignation, and was accorded the privilege of receiving all the ritesof holy church from her pas- tor, Rev. R. B. MeDouald, before her soul went to meet itsMaker. A very large con- course of people of all denominations fol- lowed her remains to St. Andrew’s, where the funeral service was performed by Rey. Monsignor McDonald, after which the de- ceased, respected for her many amiable jualities, was committed to the earth. Loxvon, May 29.—The selection of the Ear! of Jersey to represent the imperial government at the intercolonial conference which opens on June 22 at Ottawa, is gene rally applauded. The Earl of Jersey has a keen sympathy for everything which has a tendency to unité Canada and Australia, and when governor of New South Wales he learned of the need which Australia had for both cable and steamship lines to connect the colony with other parts of the empire.

Loypox, May 29.—John Morley, chief secretary for [reland, replying to a ques- tion put by John Kedmond, said that the government had no statutable power to make loans for the purpose of co-operating with the farming interests of Ireland. Mr. Morley added that it was impossible, at the present time, to consider the question of legislation upon this subject.

Inpranapotrs, Ind., May 29.—Judge Baker of the United States court instrue- ted the grand jury today on the section of the United States statute which makes it a crime to interfere with the ‘movements of the United States mails. It is under- stood that Judge Baker thought this necessary on account of the strikers acts in obstracting the runuving of trains on which mail matter is carried. Several railroads have been considering the advis- ability of laying before the jury infor- mation as to the conduct of strikers. St. John Sun.

PARIS GREEN 81r,—In a list published in some of the Island newepapers of persons selling Paris Green for the Peters Government, there appears the name of George Vanlderstine, Vernon River Bridge. Now, there is no one of that name doing business at Vernon River Bridge. True, one of that name is a clerk in the shop of George Forbes, a member of the Peters Government. Why- try to concea! things in this way? — Like his colleague, *'Mr. H. C. McDonald, in taking a fee in the Larter case, is not Mr. Forbes virtually violating the Independ- ence of Parliament Act? There are plenty of good men around Vernon River who would handle this stuff. These are Messrs. D, and W. McDonald, John Find- ley, Jas. Hayden and others. The trans- action was rather questionable, but per- haps Mr. Forbes. wanted to reward his clerk and political henchman. It is said this same George VanIderstine - succeeded in invigorating one of the grit voter? in the neighborhood, who was pronounced by his medical adviser as unable to go, sufficiently to record his vote on election day.
