Receiving Royalty. Vicrorra, B C., May 21.
At noon to day, the C. P. Steamship Abyssinia, with the Duke and Duchess of Connaught on board, anchored cff Victoria Harbor and transferred the royal pass- engers to the steamer Lorne which con- veyed them to this city. The royal tourists were received by the Lieutenant-Governor, Capt. Hu tan, R. M., Col. Holis, R. C. A., Col. Prior and their aides, who, with a few prominent citizens, accompanied them to the ship. Both the Duke and Duchess, as well at all the suite, enjvyed the trip great- ly. <Aiter a reception at landing, the party were driven to the Gov- ernment grounds where a civic addrevs of welcome was presented by Mayor Grant. After luncheon at Government House with the Lieut.-Governor, the Prince performed the ceremony of formally opening the Pro- vincial Jubilee Hospital, a large and well- appointed institution just completed at Victoria, The reception was very quiet and ynostentatious, but was wei] taken by the Prince, who is travelling very quietly. He leaves to-night for Vancouver, where to-morrow wiil be spent ; thence the party go direct to Winnipeg.

The Okronicte to-day gives complete, de- tails of the alleged conspiracy to capture Lower California and found an indedend- ent republic, to be followed by annexatijn tothe United States. The Mexican Land and Colenization Company, composed of wealthy Englishmen owing concessions on the Republic are interested. The officers claim the policy of the Mexican officials in Lower California has been ruinous to the land interests of the company. A lobby has been working at Washington jy the company’s interests. The Pheenix Mutual Life Insurance Co., of this city, controlled by policy holders, has begun a suit for $100,000 against Aaron C. Goodman, formerly President, to recover the dividends he drew on his stock, in ex- cess of the stipulated six per cent, Good- man held 3 majority of the Company's stock during the period. Excessive divi- dends were paid tu stock holders. Other directors who voted and drew cash divi- dends voluntarily restored them to the Company.
