TWO SWINDLERS GONE,

Mr. and Mrs. George M. Bevan Leave New Glasgow, N.S, Suddenly.

About two days ago George M. Bevan, who rana restuarant on Frovost Street, ieft town rather suddenly and under sus- picious circumstances, Last vear the same ventleman made an assignment, and it is supposed be made a large sum of money on the transaction. Since the assigaoment the business has deen run in the name of Mrs. Bevan. Betore leaving town Mr. and Me, Bevan made quite a haul. They purebased clothing, jewelry, watches, and parrowed money from all the business men they could get goods or money from in town. In most cases Mrs. Bevan asked to have the goods on approval. Bevan tried hard toget an $80 diamond ring at Eastwood’s jewelry store, but failed in doing +o. Both left New Glasgow well provided with clothing of the most expen- cive kind, and the jewelry Mrs. Beyan ha cecured will enable her to cut quite a dash in her new place of abode, wherever that may be. They also carried off two bi- evcles, When they left here, the morning of their disappearance, Bevan went first to Westville on a bicycle, aud his wife fol lowed him from New Glasgow, They left two young boys in their res*‘aurant when they wentaway, and no suspicion was aroused uoti!l the evening, and they | bad probably gone as far as St. Jobo. The stock left m the shop, including a | piano, was seized and sold at auction tor rent.—Eastero Cironic!e.

and I may add that even the provincial government was saved no inconsiderable sum in the way of teachers’ salaries. We cap form some estimate of what was saved to the city treasury and borne by the Catholics, by noting the amount of indebt- edness contracted by the purchase of the Upper Prince Street and the coustruction as ai580 by the rental of the Queen Square School. Nor will it do to say that the city did not oblige these children to attend the convent schools, for the fact remains that the city treasury was thereby saved several thou- sands of dollars ; and now to complain because the trustees are asked to rent a echool building for the accomodation of some of these children, is emphatically unjust and ungrateful. However, I should think better of the citizens of Charlottetown than to suppose that they would be a party to such ingratitude. Then, again, what the Guardian says about devoting the school rooms to other purposes after school hours is rather un- called for. Surely it does not mean to say any use will be made of them that will in reason be objected to by the trustees, and especially if they engage notto do eo. Speaking about ovber uses being made of school rooms after teaching hours, the Guardian should be aware of the fact thai in many of our public echool buildings non-Catholic assemblies are held frequent ly for denominational purposes, such as prayer meetings, revivals, sacred lectures, etc. and I have never known a case in which the Catholic trustees or Catholic ratepayers ever ol jected to such uses being made of the schovol:voms after teaching hours. In any case, the fact remains that these uses are being made of the public school houses, and yet no person considers that on this account being violated. The talk about the con- vent chapel and its appurtenances is just a little childish. Surely it do-@ not mean to say tne trustees wete requested to rent also the convent chapel ; and if not, what has the chapel to do with the school rooms during teaching hours, or for that

; matter at any other time, even though it

were a synagogue? If its proximity be objected to, one might as well object to buying Pink Pilis from a druggist because he keeps a supply of strychnine pills in the same drug store.

Your contemporary next complains that the Nuns should act as public school teachers, and goes on to say that “ these jadies are trained especially for the duty of propagating their faith.” Ifthe editor would visit the school in question he

would find that, even now, when it is not under the Act, the text-books in almost every particular ave the same as those

amines the children, he wiil find out that their school hours are not monopolized by “the duty of propazating their faith.’ This is a fair test, and should be accepted. But let us take anotuer view of this point. Ia our province to-day there are many clergy- meu, both Protestant and Catholic, who boll licens:+aater the Pab'ie Schools Act. These men,to use the words of your contemporary, ‘are trained especially for the duty of propagating their faith’. Now, should these clergymen desire to ieach in cur public schools, there is poth- ing in the Act to prevent them from doing so, and they would be perfectly within their rights in engaging as public school teachers. Why then object to the Nuns’ becoming teachers in -a public school, providing tney hold the necessary license ?

Regarding the insinuation that these ladies would endeavour to impress their religious views on non-Catholic childre,-I venture tO assure your contemporary that, even now, these schools are frequented by ooa-Catholic child-e1, whose pacents are intelligent men and women who know what they are doing, and we have yet to learn ¢f a case in which the religious —be- lief cf these pupils was ever tampered with by their teachers. In fact these teachers, wether under the public schools system or ind pendent of it, are strictiy forbidden to tamper*with the religious be- lief of non-Catholie pupils, and if this pre- hibition has been complied with ia the past, what reason is there for supposing it should be violated in tbe fature ?

Another point the Guardian endeavours to make on this matter I will, with your kind permission, answer in a future issue. It is to Le regretted that your contempor- ary does not show a disposition to be fair in this matt-r. One should be able to dea] with such matters w.thout being nn - necessarily offensive.
