CrickeTt.—An Eleven of the Phoenix Club of Charlottetown propose going to Summerside on Friday the 19th inst., to lay a friendly match with an eleven of the bib of that town. The Pheenix eleven are Cathrae, John Longworth, jr., R. Haviland, B. Davies, jr., McArthur, J. Jenkins, Newbery, lL. Yeo, Weeks, MeLean, S.° Fitzgerald. Judging by the pleasant faces of the members of the Summerside Club there can be no doubt that they imtend to win; and we are quite sure that our boys will be well received by them.

We were inclined to believe that the Signal Service would be properly conducted when last week we noticed the yard replaced on the staff upon the Colonial Building. But in this we have been disappointed. Only on the evening the steamer arrives from Pictou do we see a sigp*!, and then the flags are hoisted only a very few minutes before the boat arrives atthe wharf, instead of being run up as soon as tho steamer is signalled at the Blockhouse. Let us have the “Signal Service” properly attended to or not at all. At present it is enly a farce. The Patriot, as usual, is silent upon this matter.

through our streets this morning en route for St. Dunstan’s College Grounds. It was made up of members of St. Patrick’s Total Abstinence Society in their green sashes; St. Joseph’s Total Abstinence

Society in their purple sashes; Victoria’

Division 8. of T.,in whiteregalia ; and mein- bers.of the Grand Division. The procession presented a very gratifying appoarance, — made up, as it was, of all classes and creeds, and showing such a marked contrast in the state of public feeling here to that of Mon- treal at this particular time. Certainly ‘ ’tis a sweet and pleasant thing for brethren to dwell (and walk) together in unity.” The pic-nic was a pleasant and successful affair.

Last Saturday afternoon a thunder-storin assed over this village, accompanied by a ight shower cf rain. One thunder-clap

was noticed to be terribly ‘‘sharp” and close at hand ; and after a few minutes li was found that the lightning had struck a barn belonging to Mr. Hdward McAldnff, situated a half mile from the village. The building was considerably shattered, while a Calf that was inside, and a large hog in an adjoining pen, were killed on the spot.

yards distance, the inmates got a terrible scare. As the building struck is only a

very short distance from the new Catholic |

Chapel, it is thought strange the fiuid did not strike the higher object-—ihe Chapel being some 40 or 50 feet higher than the barn. On the following day (Sunday) we had several heavy showers, and the ground is now pretty thoroughly soaked. Nothing could be more opportune than this rain, as tlie ground for a considerable distance down was like road-dust.—Alcerton Pio. The Times says:—‘‘arl Beaconsiield will be weleomed in London to-day as the chief actor in one of the most honorable triumphs inthe modern diplomacy of England. To the fame of a distinguished English states- man he has added that of a singularly suc- cessiul foreign minister, and it will be hard to say what vreater distinction can remain for him.

Earl Beaconsfield alighted at the station at 4.50, and after a brief hand-shaking Ear] Beaconsfield and Lord and Lady Sahsbury entered the carriage.

As they drove along, the West Strand was one continuous cheer, with pouring bouquets by hundreds from the crowd and the houses. The crowd followed the carriage cheoring and throwing flowers all the way to Downing Street.

Later, after reaching his residence, Lord Beaconsfield in response to repeated calls from the crowd, appeared at a window and thanked them for his reception. He said Lord Salisbury and himself had brought back peace ; but peace he hoped with honor such as would satisfy the Sovereign and country.

Sir—It is generally admitted that the pco- ple of this town have not the slightest idoa of what is meant by ‘“‘punctuality.” Ido not mean to say that they do not know the mean- ing of the word; any ordinary dictionary will tell them that, bnt that practically there is no such thing as prnataelity in Charlottetown, with perhaps the single exception of the start- ing of the railway trains. é

it is deeply to be regretted that there is no authority among us having the power to fol- low the example of the King ot Burmah. I copy the following from alate English news- paper: :

‘Punctuality is regarded as a sovereign virtue in Barmah, where the King recently imprisoned all his ministers for several hours because they were unpunctual in attending his sammons to a council. His Majesty also warned them that if they were late again their term of imprisonment would be considerably prolonged.”
