The Queen vs. William Taylor. In- dicted for asssulting James McNeill on the 23rd of August la+t, when young Mc- Millan was shot. This case was given to the jury at twelve o’clock. At tweo’clock they returned tothe court room and re— ported that they could not agree upon a verdict and were discharged.

Yesterday afternoon the Chief Justice sentenced Henry McEwen to seven years imprisonment in Dorchester Penitentiary for breaking into the premises of Weeks & Warren and stealing therefrom. For the larceny of a ring from the premises of

| Owen Trainor, McEwen was also sentenc-

ed to five years in the penitentiary, ove sentence to begin when the other expires.

Charles White, for breaking into Won- nacott’s meat shep and stealing therefrom,

| was sentenced to five years in the peniten- | tiary.

William Mahar, for stabbing William

| Macdonald, was sentenced to three years

in the penitentary. William Macdonald, for assaulting Wil- liam Mahar, was sentenced to three

| months in the common jail.

Tae Ririe.—A meeting of Council of the Provincial Ritle Association was held last evening at Camp _ Brighton. The meeting was both enthusiastic and harmonious. The Deputy Adjutant-Gen- eral, who is a member of the Council ex officio, was present and aided much to the perfecting of arrangements by his timely suggestions. It is many a day since the

A sum— mary of the general report submitted showed that 452 policies had been issued by the company for the last three years; carrying insurance to the amount of $380,- 000, and that the capital is $8,450. The average cost of insuring $1,000 for 3 years was $1.37, or le-s than 46c. per annum.
