OF WALES COLLEGE.

Professor Anderzon says in the course of his report to the Superintendent of Edv- ration :

The year which has just ened, the thirty-third of tae Prince of Wales College, und the fourteenth of the united

; institution, has been upon the whole satis-

factory. The labor and constant strain of a very laborious year was greatly relieved by the conspicuons diligence and ability of many of our students, and the anxieties of the first half were amply compensated by the good order and excellent work of the second half. The dicipline, which in the early months of the year, in one of the de- artments was weak, and consequently a laily source of annoyance, was completely restored under the judicious management of the gentleman who entered upon the du- ties of that department in September. Dicipline must be maintained at any cost, for without it the prime conditition o9f success in a teacher is wanting. A teach- er, however accomplished he may be, who fails to command the respect of hie pupils, and who cannot arouse in them an interest in their studies, will] assuredly find it im- possible to mainta’n order. Intelligent occupation is the foe of levity and if young people are kept busy and sympathy with their work obtained and estabiished, suc- cess is assured.

But abundance of space is also a neces- sary condition in the maintenance of or- der. In this respect, however, we are de- plorably deficient. When young men are crowded together, when their numbers are far in excess of the accommodation, when halls are narrow, and stairways only ad- mit of being mounted in single file; when it is necessary to have a classroom in a building apart from the college, the oppor- tunities for, and the temptations to bois- terous conduct are, undoubtedly, too great. And the presence of the young ladies, while it contributes to moderate and re- strain, cannot fai: to augment the diffi- culty of the situation. I trust and hope that the trials which we have so long en- dured, and which have their origin in the inadequacy of our buildings for the pur- poses to which they are applied, are now within a measurable distanee of their ter- mination.

The number of students on our register is even greater than that of last year. Dur- ing last year we admitted 146 studente, while this year the number has risen to 176—77 young ladies and 99 young gen-

tlemen. Of these, 3 young ladies and 10 young gentlemen are students of the third year; 16 young ladies and 40 young gen- tlemen are students of the second year; and 52 young ladies and 44 young gentle- men are students of the first year. Ten students left at Christmas with third-class licenses. At the present time we have 164 in daily attendance.”

The Principal refers to the resignation of Mr. George Robinson, who, he says, has “ secured for himself a reputation as a careful, talented and conscientious teach- er”; of Mr. Shaw and of Rev. Fred E. J. Lloyd ; and also to the appointment of Mr. Herbert Shaw and Mr. Samuel Robertson, with whose work, after an experience of tive months, he expresses satisfaction.

REPLY TO “COMMON SENSE,”

Srr,—In reply to “Common Sense,” al- low me to say that the leading temperance men did not need to import an orator from abroad to tell our people how to vote on the Scott Act, as the parties in this city and province who can advocate the Scott Act or any other law for the suppression of vice and the protection of our homes are legion.

The temperance people seize the cireum- stapce of a Scott Act election to treat the electorate of Charlottetown to a hearing of one who is an adept on the question before them.

Judging from his reception here three years since, they will, I have no doubt, appreciate the treat. But does it not strike “Common Sense” that it is a ter- rible reflection on the opponents of the Act, that they cannot find anyone of inte !- ligence either at home or abroad to take the platform on their behalf.

It is not for want of money that they are unable todo this, for they are blowing around about all the money they have subscribed and have had sent from abroad, which they are going to spend in the con- test in various ways, legitimately and illegitimately, And here it would not be out of place to remind them that they had better look into the law a little on this question or they may have to spend more than they figure on before they are done with it. The temperance people of this city have,when they were unfortunate enongh to have a council who would not carry out the law, put their hand into their pockets (their own, not their dupes or got from abroad) to see that their laws were enforced, and I have no doubt wil] do so again should the occasion require it.

“Common Sense.” however, need not worry himself about the carrying out of the act, as a handsome majority of the present council elected for two years, are pledged to see that the law is enforced.

Referring to Mr. W. W. Wickham, whose success,’ in the spring examination at Mc- Gill Medical College, Montreal, has already been referred to by Tue Examiner, the Summerside Journal says : He (Mr. Wick- ham) took a good place m the first-clase honor list in all his subjects, and stood first in his year in Medical Jurisprud- ence. In Pharmacolegy and Therapen- tics he was third. In the race for the Holmes Medal next year he holds second place, but he has not yet decided to try for the medal, as the attempt means very close work and a very heavy strain on the health. We congratulate Mr. Wickham on the manner in which he is upholding the good fame of Island students at Mc- Gill.

GUARDING AGAINST BURGLARS HAS BECOME A FINE ART.

Recent Improvements Made in the Con- struction of Vaults and Their Doors— Burglars Become Inventive and so the Worid Wags and the Moon Smiles On,

The most vulnerable part of a vault now is the edye of the door. It is almost im possible to obtain an absolutely tight joint, one which will be impervious to liquid ex plosives. The old method of attack was by powder blown into the crack of the vanit door. As the construction of these doors became more perfect this was made | impracticable. Then, the burglar turned | his attention to other explosives and to day he uses uitro-glycerine. Nitro-glyce ine when warm runs as freely as water, If | the crack of a door is not absolutely tight the nitro-glycerine will find some small lodging place in it. When exploded it rips off the door, tears off its outer layers or Ovens a space where a larger charge of explosives can be used. If the joint is too well fitted to permit the nse of vitro. | glycerine and the vanlt is in an isolated | plice where powerful explosives can be uxed, dynamite is laid against a weak spot snd well tamped. Its explosion either makes an opening or weakens the walls or door so thas tools or other explosives can be usen to advantage. With a gurantee of comparative freedom ivr operation a set of burglars can enter a moderu vault in one to eight hours. The shortest pro- cess is usually by the use of explosives, and it has been found that the high ex plosives are singularly local in effect and produce very little sound. Hammer and sledge are often used, though burgla:s prefer boring, with the use of a blow pine to draw the temper of the steel attacked 3ut the modern construction renders this sometimes extremely difficult because ot the high conductivity of iron and the close contact cf the cold steel adjacent, Burg lars seldom attempt to make holes of more than an inch in diameter, and the heat from the small flame which can be intro duced through such a hole is quickly dis sipated. Sometimes the burglar bores through the soft metal and breaks the in tervening sheets of hard metal with the blows of a hammer, removing the m+tal piecemeal. It is estimated that an expert with finely tempered tools will work through an inch of a vavlt wall in an hour. It sometimes happens, thouzh, that an inexpert burglar abandons a job after penetrating the outer layer of steel be cause his poorly tempered tools were all dulled in the attempt.

ANCIENT HOSPITALS. Theee Institutions Were in Existence 500 Years Before Christ.

The first real hospital was cne situated at Epidaurus, and dedicated to Asculapias. This hospital was in fnll working order 500 years before Christ. It consisted not ouly of a general hospital, but of two special hospitals in addition. The Terple proper contained accommodation for ordin- ary or acute cases, and also a hydropathic establishment. In separate buildinus were a lyingin hospital and a chronie hospital, and to the latter the aged aud in- firm, and those believed to be in articuio mortis, were admitted. The priests of Saturn in Egypt treated people for lunacy 1,500 vears beiore Christ. This last fact is important, because we find that under them Innacy was considered as a disease not to be repressed, but as one to be over- come by kiiduess and skilled treatment; and the temples of Saturn combined mach that is now to be met in many of our best lunatic asylums. These hospitals and asylums were founded on the pay princi ple, for no one who resorted te them had 80 little self-respect as to desire to obtain tree medical relief, and all took care to compensate those at whose hands they re- ceived treatment and benefit.

There were home hospitals at Rome 250 years Sefore Christ, called Tabernm Medi- cw, which at first only contained consult- ing rooms, where the physicians used to see out-patients on payment. After ex perience it was found that there were many cases that could be better treated if théy wese constantly under observation. So rooms were built for the reception of in-patients as annexes to the Taberne, where paying patients were admitted and treated successfully. This is a very inter- esting point, becaase these Taverns in- cluded all the branches of our present hospitals—i.e., an out patient departm nt, an in-patient department, consuiting rooms, and hospital accommodation for paying patients; but all those who at tended—i.e., both the in-patients aud the out-patients—had to pay for the treatment they received.—Th~ Hospital.

Down the front is a line of scalloped edge open work, to show the stocking of | the wearer. The elaborate and broad but- | ton piece has three diamond-edged points, | corresponding to the three buttons, and a | circular hole is made below each button, through which also the hosiery is visible when on the foot. How Cigar Ashes Can Be Utilized.

Cigar ashes are used for medical pur poses—as acure for ringworm, epidemi« scariatina, etc. They are useful on ac count of the lime and alcoholic properties they contain. Cigar ashes have been sold ander the pretentious name of ‘diamond dust from the sun,” and the purposes to which theyare chiefly put are cleaning plate brightening and sharpening razors, lancets and doctors’ other delicate instruments as an insecticide for plants, ete., and as a tooth powder. It has been atated that a London firm offered a guinea per ounce for them for the purpose of compounding with ather articles as a valuable dent.frice, The ash is, however, so light that it re. | quires a very large quantity indeed to weigh one ounce.
