The Rifle.

On Saturday last Capt. Longworth’s Company—82nd Battalion—hele their semt- anaiial Shooting Match at the Kensington Range, for the Company's Silver Cup and money prizes. Although the weather was very windy and unfavorable, some good shooting was made. Private John Crocket was again the fortunate man, winning the Cup by a score of 80 at 200, 400 and 500 vars, 7 shots at each range. He was followed closely by Corp. Crawford, who also scored 80, but failed in the largest score at the long range. The following 1s the score of each competitor who succeeded in

The roof of the Parliament Building, Ottawa, caught fire yesterday morning, from the upsetting of a charcoal brazier, used by a tinsmith in repairing the roof. The Commons Chamber was flooded by water, Total damage estimated at $700.

CONDENSED DESPATCHES.

There is considerable excitement among gamblers and sporting men who bet on the recent alleged international ‘‘walk” in New York, by the discovery that the track was short 59 feet in each mile. This would make only three of the late contestants enti! ied to a share in the gate money.

General Hughes’ brigade reached Khelat- Ighilzai, on the 30th September. ‘The Governor of that place furnished him with supplies. The tribes profess friendship for the British, but’ are bitter against Yakoob Khan.

A despatch dated, Valparaiso, Sept. 8. says the news of the advance of the Peru- vian and Bolivian armies is confirmed.

It is reported that the Chilians before the evactuation of Callama sacked and burned the place. The Chilians have raid- ed into Bolivia beyond the Conchas Blancos. *

It is reported that Peru has suspended payments from the treasury and prohibited the exportation of silver.

Authentic information has been received 4 at Simla that communication with the Brit- ish troops has been eut off on both sides of Shuturgardan Pass by the tribes. Rein- forcements are being sent up the Kurum Valley.

Cetewayo has arrived at Cape Town.

A Vienna despatch states that Gortscha- koff will probably be succeeded by Prince Labanoff, on whom will devolve the task of reconciling Russia and Germany.

A large increase of the Russian army is proposed.

Cyrus W. Field has erected a monument to Major Andre at Tappan, New York, the scene of his execution ninety-nine years ago.

By the giving way of a stand at the County Fair Grounds, in Adrian, Michigan, on Thursday; 6 persons were killed and 44 wounded, several fatally.

Reported Mutiny on Board H. M. S. “Bacchante.”

Sensational rumors of disturbances and mutiny among the crew of H. M. ship ‘‘Bacchante” are in circulation. On the 17th of September the Prince of Wales with his two sons, Prince Albert Victor and Prince George, went to Portsmouth, where the ‘‘Bacchante” was lying ready for her departure. The two young Princes are naval cadets upon this ship, which was pre- paring for a cruise around the world. On the arrival of the Prince of Wales with

his two sons, there was a_ fine parade of military on South Sea Common, a_ torchlight- procession and a serenade. The next morning the two Princes, accompanied by

their father and Prince Edward of Saxe- Weimar, Prince and Princess Herman of Saxe-Weimar, and Prince Louis of Batten- burg, went on Board the Bacchante, and were there received with the usual honors. Leaving the two young Princes on board, the Royal party left the ship, and next day she started on her cruise. At this time re- ports among the popuiace of Portsmouth and Southampten were in circulation con- cerning ill-feeling which existed among the crew of the vessel, and the reports received may, perhaps, be only exaggerations of these rumors.
