The Editor of the Colonial Herald in his in st number,has expressed in unaffect- ed and true christian style his pity and disappointment at the sad lacking of ability betrayed by his qnondam friend: Justly' indeed does he feel that Mr. Duncan MacLean had got a fool for his client.

The 81'. George,- steamer, arrived here thi morning from Pictou, with the English mail, which was received at Halifax by the Britannia aftera passage of 14 days from Livy-pen! The news is ofthe utmoat import- ance, as regards the progress of Re- peal in Ireland, and the arrest of Mr. O’Connell and eight others. We hasten to lay before our readers, the particulars in connexion with this extraordinary event.

One ofthe boldest steps ever tinder- taken by a government is the arrest of O'Connell, and the dispersion of the Clontarf meeting. Nothing else is talked about. Whatever may be its ultimate results, the ﬁrst move a- guinst Repeal has been not less suc- cessful than prompt. From the pas- sive the Government has rushed to the aggressive policy—from one ex- treme to the other. Of. course a con- ﬂict of opinion is abroad as to the time in which the new policy towards Ireland was ﬁxed upon. It is main- tained, by the opponents of the Go- vernment, that nothing could have been more clumsy than the way in which they commenced. The Clon- tarf meeting was to have been held on Sunday the 8th, and the procla- mation for dispersing it was not is- sued until late in the afternoon of

Saturday; so late, that it was impos-[ sible to aprise persons who had come ' from a distance. As this meeting was to have been the last of the mon-‘ ster meetings, all the strength ofthe Repealer was intended to brought to bear upon it.

had been hired to convey parties from Liverpool, Manchester, Yorkshire, and other parts of England, and the counties abutting upon the Irish me- tropolis were to have furnished their myriads. Orders had been issued by the associaiton for the due regu- lation ofthe “ Repeal cavalry,” and the spot selected for the meeting was the battle ground, in the eleventh entury, ofasangninary conﬂict be- tween the invading Danes and the native Irish. Every imaginable sti- mulant was to be called into requisi- tion, by keeping up the steam to the highest possible pitch, to make the last display the most imposing of all. But the late hour at which the pro- clamation appeared, interrupting pro- ceedings long previously determined upon, and which could not, from

their nature and extent, be immedi-

ately cancelled, althoogh happily un- attended with danger, loolcs like a wish on the part of the Irish Government to court a collision with the people. No time was lost by the authorities in giving eﬂ'ed’t to their determination to prohibit the meeting. All the a- vailable military force ofthe country was in or near Dublin, the men were provided with sixty rounds ofcartridge and twenty four hours’ provisions, a park of artillery was on the ﬁeld of Clontarf, and if Mr. O’Connell had not, by a timely counter proclama- tion, prevented the people from as- sembling. the Consequences would have been lamentable.

But so great is his popularity— so boundless his inﬂuence over his coun- trymen, that his proclamation was at- tended to and the meeting did not take place. During Sunday, the road be- tween Dublin and Clontarf,—-some three or four miles,—was densely thronged by people passing to and front the intended scene ofoperations, but no disturbance took place. Some . harmless jokes, which the populace of Dublin,proverbial for their wit and humor, cracked with the soldiers who lined the road and occupied the ﬁeld, aﬂbrded a good deal of amusement to the idlers, but nothing more serious occurred. Thus stood matters up to Sunday night. The following day a great meeting took place at the Ab- bey street Theatre, the Corn Ex. change being too small for the pur- pose. Mr. O’Conne'I'l addressed the meeting on the events of the previous day, statingthat if the Government did n:.-t intend to shed blood, they had pursued a course. the most likely to effect that object. He counselled obe- diem-e to the law, announced his in- tention of holding simultaneous meet- ings in every parish of lreland,_to pe- tition for Repeal and to address her Majesty, and declared that nothing could accelerate his wishes so much as the interference of the Govern- ment. He intended to carry out the plan of the arbitration courts, for dis- pensingjustiee to the people without cost, universally, and he hinted at a plan for buying up the debts on Irish estates, by subscription, in order that the money might be spent in Ireland instead of England, at pre- sent. The rent was announced to a- mount to £l,105, ofwhich £600, de-, nominated “ proclamation money,”‘ had been collected that day. ,
