We were shown to-day a novelty in the shape of a watch, to be seen at E,W. Taylor's. The dial is in silver gilt and enamel. The figures are from | to 12; but at 1 o'clock a.m., presto! the figures disappear and in their place are figures from 13 to 24.} {By a simple touch of a spring this mechanism is stopped and the watch works like an ordinary watch. It is certainly a marvel of mechanical ingen- uity.

A New Perropicau.—The Grip Publishing Company, of Toronto, have commenced the publication of a new monthly periodical, en- titled Grip’s Own Library. The first number is made up of “Good Things from Grip,” being comic pictures and comic reading se- lected from the pages of Grip. Mea. Freawk O. Ineson, of the Claire Scott Company, distinguished himself last evening by saving the life of the five year old child of Mr. Godfrey, who resides near the Revere House. The child was playing in the street, near the hotel, right in the way of the car- riages rushing to catch the steamer which was about being moored. One team, somewhat late, was coming down the street at a lively pace; its driver did not notice the child in the street, and was upon it when Mr. [reson sprang forward and snatched the child almost from under the horses feet. The child was badly scared but otherwise uninjured. Had Mr. [reson not noticed and rescued the child when he did, we would in all probability have had its death to chronicle to-day.

The public accounts show the actual amount received was $37,-

It must be realized; however, that all through that year Canada suffered particularly from other causes in addition to | the ordinary depréssion of trade felt all over | the world. The effects ot the rebellion | were severely felt as well as the smallpox epidemic in Montreal. On the other hand, the estimated total | expenditure was increased. The difference | may be said to be mader up by the charges for suppression of therebellioninthe North- | west which were estimated at $2,300,000, | whereas the actual expenditure on this! head was $3,177,200, and in addition there | was an increased charge on account of | mounted police of $1,029,569, as against an estimate of $832,241. These expendi- ' tures were unavoidable and hal to be met}! and, unfortunately for the Dominion, the deficit of last year was the consequence.

Had the flames communicated to these, as was evidently intended, there would haveebeen a serious. conflagration for ws to chronicle. This, it is said, is not the first time the cleaner in question has been the means .of preventing the successful carrying out of the designs of the tire bug. The ,identity of the fend whose nefarious design was thus happily frustrated, is suspected,and it is hoped that for the safety of the people, if for no other reason, the strong arm of the law will soon have him —within its grasp. .Mr. Perry, it will be remembered, has already suffered serious loss from fire, and can, therefore, ill afford to be made the object of the evil designs of any one. ~ i <b

Burglary at Tignish.

Axsout four o’clock yesterday morning a burglar entered the boarding-house of Mrs. Arsenault,a short distance from the railway station at Tignish. He went into one of the bedrooms, took the quilts, sheets, ete. therefrom, and after tearing the curtains of the windows, deposited the entire collection under one of the windows which he had opened for the purpose. Mrs. Arsenault, who had risen early to prepare breakfast for her guests, most of whom were to leave

unwelcome visitor at this stageand demand- ed a stay of proceedings. The burglar was loth to comply with her request, and the noise which ensued aroused the guests from their slumbers. Three or four of them hastily dressed themselves and came down stairs to ascertain the why and wherefore of the unseemly disturbance. They took in the situation at a glance and speedily hastened the departure of the burglar, who turned out to be a neighbor of Mrs. Arsen- ault, without his booty. After making off with the bed-clothing he probably intended returning for the bedstead. He is still at large. ‘The authorities should look into the matter. A man of this character should not be allowed to run at large.
