—The movement to fitly celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Sir Jobo Macdon- ald’s eutrauce into public life, has taken shape, and the demonstration promises to eclipse any previously held in this country. The Montreal Gazette says the arrangement for a banquet to the premier in Montreal on his return from England are well advanced; the com- mittees have been struck, and evly the fixing of a date remains to be made. It is proposed at the same time to hod a_ public cdemoustration in the largest hall that can be obtained, aud a meeting will shortly be convened to carry oa this purpose. In the west a series of demonst: ations will be organized. Toronto conservatives have determined toteuder a banquet to the priemer aod receive him with mani festa ious of the love and admiration in

will testify their loyalty to Canada’s greatest statesman by a grand gathering of its people and a dinner to the premier. —They bad a great deal of trouble in the University of New Brunswick last week. It appears a mischievous member of the junior class tessed a slipper in the direction of one of the protessors. The offence instead of being admitted was denied, and the class, in accordance with college custom, refused to become informer against the slipper thrower, and were suspended. The junior and freshmen classes, most injudiciously made common cause with the juniors, and so the work of educa- tion .as forthe time ceased. The St. John Telegraph says: Possibly too much has been made of what appears to have been at first a not very serious offence, but the denial has made it more so. The offender should give himself up, aod we have no doubt will be advised se to do by his classmates, If he will not act upon such advice the class should uo longer protect him. Ask any one of the lead- ing lumbering firms of Ottawa, end its answer will be decisive enough. This fact alone justities our defence of Canada, and denunciation of the slander. Our morning contemporary can do as it pleases, but the policy of this journal is that in matters affecting the common interests of Ottawa in particular and Canada in general IT WILL RISE SUPERIOR TO ALL POSSIBILITIES OF GAINING POLITICAL ADVANTAGE by **bc ating” the country and decrying its greatness.

The Privilege of the Jury.

Under the above heading, the Quebec Daily Telegraph of the 22nd inst. contains a lengthy review of the alleged arbitrary conduct of Mr. Justice Ramsey, in the trial! of the woman Boutet, at Quebec re- cently, for murder, and who is new under }sentence to be hanged. The article is from ithe pen of one of the ablest criminal lav - |yers of the Quebce Bar, Mr. John O Far- irel, and it fainly bristles with citations from the law-books, holding that the | jurors, and not the judge, are the judges of

' : ° ithe evidence. It appears that after the learned judge had charged the jury strongly against the prisoner,

they were, after a certain lapse of time, called into court, when they declared that | they could not agree toa verdict. He is | then represented as having addressed thom | substantially es follows: “‘He could not | conceive why they had not agreed, the case | being soclear. The accused, herself, had admitted that she had given arsenic to the | deceased; and that it was impossible to believe her statement (in explanation) that in so doing, she madea mistake. If they had not so far agreed, they must have been tampered with from the outside. If they did not agree upon a verdict, it would be a mockery of justice, He would not | discharge them until they should have | sgrecd upon a verdict one way or the other, even though he should have to detain them | until the close of the term.”
