We are not certain whether a voter nfiy have his name placed upon the list by means or through the representations of a third party. every voter will have to appear before the Jounty Judge in person. At ail events the Act requires that ‘‘ the evidence re- lating to the revision of the electoral lists shall be under oath.” It also prevides that if “any person whose right to be a voter is the subject of enquiry, do not at- tend in obedience to a Subpoena, the Judge may, if he thinks fit, on the ground of nonsattendance ef such person, strike his name off the lists of Electors or of either of them, or refuse to place his name on the said list or lists, as the case may

Counsittor Looper, as one of the Market Committee, said he knew nothing about the leave given to Mr. LePage to erecta shed on the Market Square. He would support a motion for having all the may/{ chinery on the square removed,

His Worsnir said he was waiting for Councillor Harris to give an explanation relating to the erection of the shed.

Tur Recorpyr said it was dangerous to have the machinery in that place, as citi- zens passing through the square were liable to have their legs or arms broken. If such were to happen, there would be a nice bill against the city in consequence,

Moved by Councillor Heartz, that the owners of machines get not!ce to clear their machines from the Square by Saturday nigbt. —Carried.

On representation of Councillor Mur- phy the unfulfilled contract to bore in the Royalty, entered into with Messrs, Harris & Co., was referred to the Recorder for the purpose of having the agreement en, forced, if necessary, at once.

Counctttor Byrne moved the following resolution;

Whereas, various circumstances as well as reports of Committees, prove there exists au ab- solute necessity for the services of a competent Civil Kogiveer for the magagement and im- provement of the streeis und squares of the City.

Be it therefore resolved that « practical Civil Engineer be appointed for the purpose of

planning and superinted og improvements in, connection with the strets, squxves, and parks of this City.

Resolved, that Mr. Patrick D. Cox, be ap- poiated ty the office of Civil Eagiueer, fur the City of Charlottowan, at the ra’e of sot more than $500 per annum.

After some discussion the above resolu- tions passed.

Councitton Murpuy— Referring to the petition of inhabitants of the eastern part the town for an additional Steam Fire En- gine, moved the following resolution : --

SUPREME COURT—TRINITY TERM.

John McLean,v. Dr. McKay. Trial now going on. ‘This is an action brought by the plaintitl to recover damages for mal-prac- tice in setting his arm. Damages laid at For the Plaintiff, Mr. McLeod; for defendant, Mr. Peters and Mr. Longworth. [t appears that on the 3d of October, McLean had his wrist fractured or broken by a pow, der explosion while working in a well. He procured the medical services of -Dr. Mc- Kay, to have the arm restored to its former usefulness, which the Doctor failed to do. McLure, consequently, brought the action for damages. A number of the medical men of the city have been examined.

In a letter just received from the Ma- nager of the Company by the Agents in St. John, after expressing his sympathy in the loss brought upon the city, he adds: “ You will Tam sure be pleased to learn that large as our loss by this disaster will be, it will be amply covered by the Company’s profits of the past half year, and that after making allowances for this calamity a fair surplus of profit will remain.” We may also remark that the reserve fire funds of the Company, which 1t is not necessary on this occasion to touch, in themselves repre- ;, sent asum of £992 446 sterling, or neariy five million dollars, and that beside these reserve funds the insured have as further security the paid up capital and unlimited liability of the Shareholders.”
