A PREPOSSESSING young girl not much over twenty, giving the name of Anna Suboiger, who stated she came a few months ago from Halifax, N. S.,.was arrested by an officer at Montreal a few days ago for attempting suicide by taking poison. On being taken to the station it was found that she 1 been there before on a charge of a similar kind, but the first time it was with a revolver she had concealed on her person that she was to end her life. She died in horrible agony in Notre- Dame Hospital.

Messrs. H. H. anp W. H, Tueakston, two young printers from Halifax, employed at the Standard otfice during the last few weeks, re- turned home, undertaking the journey from Pictou to Halifax on foot. They left,there or. Wednesday at 4 p. m., and arrived at Halifax on Saturday at 7.45 p. m., and report them- selves as being in fine walking trim yet. That's the kind of stuff printers are made of. Pictou Standard. These young men are not by any means the only printers that have ‘footed it” from Pictou to Halifax.

Tue St. John Telegraph says that on Wed- nesday afternoon a serious accident occurred at Messrs. J. McGoldrick & Co's. warerooms on Portland Bridge. Two women named Me- Namee and Coyle, who were working in the loft assorting matter, fell through a hatchway to the floor beneath, a distance of eighteen feet, sustaining several bruises. It appears that the hatch, which runs on a tramway, is kept in its place by a pin, but had been used that a day and a bale was upon it. The women were warned to be careful and not go near it, but they proceeded to roll the bale oif, and, as they did so, the hatch slid over the way and they fell through. The injuries, though very painful, are not dangerous and both are recovering.

Some few days ago a country boy, iving about five miles from this city, was ploughing in a field over the site of where, for very many years, an old house formerly stood. In so doing, the plough turned up the coin, which is in a state of perfect preserva- tion. Visions of Capt. Kidd’s treasure flitted across the youth’s mind, and asa result that field is sure to produce good crops. It was never so thoroughly and systematically plough- ed before. Pending further results the youth came to town with his “treasure trove,” and disposed of it to Mr. Mervill as the highest bidder. The coin is of silver, about the size of a fifty cent piece, is of Spanish rin, and bears on its face the Spanish coas of arms, surmounted by a crown, and the words PHILIP. V: D. G. HISPAN. ET. IND. REX: and on the reverse side two figures supporting crowns, while a third crown sur- mounts two globes w@ spheres, and the words VETRAQUE VNUM 1742 M.

An Independent Opinion.

Orrawa, June 18.

The Evening Journal, independent, says that if the people of Nova Scotia find it a disadvantage to them to remain in the union the granting of temporary subsidies and concessions cannot make the yoke less galling, and it will be better to let them go. Let us stop all outlay upon railways, har- bors, and other public works, erect custom houses at the Isthmus and treat our inde- pendent neighbors as we now treat New- foundland. It will be better for Canada and also for Nova Seotia, St. John, N. B., will take the place of Halifax as the terminus of the Intercolonial railway, and will become the Winter Port of Canada.

Nathaniel Wertzel, a prominent farmer who lived near here dropped dead while about to poll his vote on election day.

William Hertie, a farmer, has been miss- ing for ten days. He is said to have had a quarrel with his son and many strange rumors are afloat. Search are closely scouring the country in an endeavor to find him.
