If the city owned a lot on the outskirts of the town the scavengers could cart the rubbish out there, where it could be burat. We would have le-s fear of disease break- ing out, and there wouid be economy in it, as well. Then again what is more dis— gusting than for one to stumble over dead horses and catile in the heat of summer It is not an uncommon oceurence to find carcasses decking the sea-beach for the dis'ance of 4 miles around the shore. With the result thatthe air is peitonous, in- stead of bracing and healthfu! as it woald otherwi-e be. These carcasses could be buried in lime or burnt with other rubbish. Many of the visitors who come to the Island every summer woudir bow this state of affaira still exists.

By-the-by, how is it that so many paupers are allowed to keep horses? I understand we have no-rociety for the prevention of cruelty to animals, but each humane citizen should do all in his power to put down the horrible cruelty that is to be witnessed every day. Christian (?) people who are done with an old horse that has served them faithfully for years tee] a wave of charity sweep through their hearts, and the first poor man that comes along gets the horse for nothing—or 4 two dollar bill! These men say: “A man must live, he must have his norse.” Dar- ing the summer he may earn @ tew cente. During the winter they den’t make any- thing. Still the family must live, and the horse must be fed—or starve—and starve he does, unless some well-meaning person gives a little hav or straw, which but pro- longs a life of agony for the yoor dumb creature. Wil] our city fatbers please give the plan their consideration.

The 34th anniversary of New Glasgow Division, No. 56, was celebrated in New Glasgow Hall on the 3rd of April, with a grand entertainment. Notwithstanding the bad roads, the hall was filled to its utmost capacity, with spectators to par- ticipate in a good evening’» time. Mr. Jas. Dickieson occupied the chair, and after a few brief remarks pro- ceeded with the programme. Speeches by Messrs. Wm. Paird and George Smith were delivered in a manner which is char- acteristic of these werthy gentlemen. Readings by Messrs. R. E. Stevenson and Herbert Toombs were greatly appreciated by the audience. A _ dialogue ca'led the “Irish Linen Peddler ” was also, worthy of note as were also the soloa duets, and recitations. After spend'ng an enjoyabletwohours which passe | away only tov quickly the entertainment was broaght to a close br singing “God Save the Queen.” It is to be hoped that New Giasgow Division will long continue the great work in which it is engaged and will still con- tinue to give such rare treats to the public.
