CORKY AND THE JUICE PIGS

are not a normal comedy trio...

It was a short 18 months ago that Corky and the Juice Pigs made their first ever live appear- ance as a contestant in the La- batt’s Chrystal Comedy Quest, an amateur contest being hels throughout Ontario at colleges and universities. The trio of Joe Costa, Sean Cullen, and Phil Nichol were in the midst of com- pleting their drama studies at the University of Windsor when the Quest made its way to their cam- pus. They entered and they won. But that was hardly the end of it. The tour coordinators, who were preparing to film a televi- sion special based on the win- ners of the contest, were over- whelmingly in favor od featur- ing Corky and the Juice Pigs on the one hour special. That spe- cial aired on Global Television several times and proved yet an- other stepping stone in a quick ascent for the new comics on the block. Funny Business, the

“agency” side of the Yuk Yuk’s, became interested in the act and

within two weeks Corky and the

Juice Pigs had gone from “am- ateur night” status to “head- liner” on the Yuk Yuk’s circuit, something that takes most comics And a short time later, the coordinators of the Labatt’s Crystal Comedy Quest chose Corky and the Juice Pigs to be its headlining feature act on the Quest that followed the one not a year earlier during which the trio made their first perfor- mance... ever.

At this time, Corky and the Juice Pigs are considered Canada’s newest and hottest comedy act on the cam- pus and club circuit. Their tour itineraries read like those of sea-

years to acheive.

What makes Corky and the Juice Pigs funny? They repre- sent what’s new in comedy, a fast- paced, youthful, offbeat presenta- tion that combines music, drama, stand-up comedy, and _ several

other forms of stage techniques.

They rely on wit and a certain kind of delivery that only they can provide. They don’t abuse the first ten rows to draw cheap laughs, or rely on profanities to replace originality. They are not only comics, but they are enter- tainers. They engulf the venues they play with acceptance. Audi- ences are lovin’ them... but few

can pinpoint just exactly what makes them tick. They’re like the “special sauce” on a Big Mac, millions of people love it, but no- body knows exactly what’s in it.

The “Curious Frogs Tour 1988-89”, as we so passionatly re- fer to the first independant tour of Corky and the Juice Pigs, is

in full swing. They’re perform- ing at a slew of Canadian col- leges and universities and night- clubs and the questions we’re re- ceiving are not so much “where did they come from?” but moreso “will they ever stop their ascent to stardom?” There’s no flexibil- ity on this point...NO.
