The keep- ing of fences in good repair and the plant- ing of hedges along their lines to take their places in time would also pay. Fencing rails cost more now than they once did, and some day they will probably have to be thus replaced. By the way. would it not be possible to improve.some of these unsightly fences off the face of the country altogether? The road front should also be attended to. Shrubs and shade trees should be planted in ornamental positions. The house should be adorned with climb- ers, and in short everything done that will inake home pleasant to the eye of those who remain in it, and its memory in the minds of those who may wander frem it the brightest thing on earth. In short, our farmers should make themselves into coun- try gentlemen, and bring up their sens and their daughters, ®o, with a pride in their origin and calling. If this proposition wore carried out, what a changed country this would be in six months. Eden itself, we are given to understand, would, on the other hand, soon have to become a wilder- ness had man not been put into it ‘‘to dress and to keep it.”

The Scot and the Devil.
Highlanders have the habit when talking their En@iish, such as it is, of interjecting the personal pronoun ** he’ where not re- quired, such as ‘‘the king he has come.” Often in consequence a sentence is rendered exiremely ludicrous. A gentleman said he recently listened to Rev. Mr. --—— , who tesan his d s:ourse thus:—*‘ My friends, you will tind my text im the first epistle generated Peter, fifth chapter and eghth verse: ‘‘The devil he goeth about like a roaring lion seeeking whom he may ;devour.” Now, my brethern for your instruction I have divided my test into four heads. Firstly, we shali endeavour to ascertain who the devil he was. Secondly, we shall inquire into his geographical posi- ‘ion, namely : ** Where the devil he was. Thirdly, who the devil he was seeking. And, fourthly and lastiy, we shall endeavor to solve a question which has never yet been seived—-what the devil he was roaring about.”

Al. though daughter of the English Premier she earns her own living, having taken the position of private secretary to the vice principal of Newnham College, where she was lately a student. Her main object is to set an example to her sex, and to do her share towards putting a stop to the idea, which is so prevalent'in England, that it is degrading for a lady to work for her living. :

Next morning Forrester was fovnd dead in bed, and hig wife in sveh a condition that her recovery Was despaired of, Two men, one of them James Hanna, of Oakland, Pa., were found dead in bed in the Burnet House, at Stroudsburg, on Wednesday. They blew out the gas on retiring, and were suffi- catted.
A begus Medical College, similar to that recently discovered in Philadelphia, and desiguated the New England University of Aris and Science, has been found in Bos- ton, the leading operator of which appears to be Mr. Harry C. Stickney, who was one of the Buchanan Faculty of Philadelphia, What number of the diplomas has been issued by the New England institution is not known. Stickney asserts that none have been issued in this country, but there are evidences that some have been sent to Germany and other parts of Europe, and inquiry on the subject has been made of parties at the suggestion of the Ger- man Minister at Washington. Stickney, in 1875, procured «New Hampshire a char- ter for this institution, which however was soon afterwards repealed, but investigation shows that the business has heen active at the office of the University in this city,
Dearn or A Norep Caaracrer.—Mr. Gamble, Master of Horse to the Emperor Napoleon, died recently at Chiselhrrst. He was porn im Saltecoats in 1817. He entered the service of Prince Louis Na- poleon tm Lendon in 1846, went with him to Paris in 1848, played his part in the coup detat in 1851, acconipanied the Em- peror throngh the Italian campaign of 1859, the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, and was with the Emperor in captivity at Wil- helmshohe. He also came to Chiselhurst, and remained the faithful attendant of the Emperor, Prince Imperial and Empress who were greatiyattached to him. De- ceased had many Scotch and English friends, who will remember his hospitality during their visits to the Imperial stables at the Louvre, where he had the charge of the largest and finest stud in the world, He received presents from mest of -the crowned heads in Europe when vis- iting Paris, including the Queen and Prince Albert. He was proud of being a Scotch- inan, remarkably shrewed and intelligent, and kind to his relatives.
