posite. It may be called the gorgeous method. It rushes into statistics bewilder ingly. Demonstrates the whole world to
be fools, England only excepted. It is Leviathan. It makes the ocean of statistics to boil hke a pot. Club issued an appeal to American farmers and spread it all over the West. It is safe tosay that millions of copies were distri-
buted. It went upall over the land, and helped the farmers light their fires. Its aim was to stir them up to revolution, by
showing them that every farmer consumed two hundred dollars’ worth of manufac- tured goodsevery year! If there were 5,000,000 of farmers this would make $1,000,000,000 of manufactured goode annually. English greed, not stopping to enquire into the absurdity of such a state- ment, set its eyes upon that one billion of dollars annually. Out of pure benevolent regard tothe Americian farmer, with whose hard lot it deeply sympathized, it would be willing to ‘‘ sell dear and buy cheap,” in order to furnish the vast supply, dismiss all the American mechanics to farming, and thus over-stock the grain market, to the delight of England and the Cobden Club, All this is put forward with charming inno- cence, not dreaming that any one will ask questions. How many dollars can the Eng- lish farm laborer spend for manufactured | Zoods ? Can he spend one fourth or even one-eighth of that sum on an average ! Surely it is a blessed land where the farmers can indulge their taste and secure comfort at that rate! The American farmer read, and laughed at, and burned the pamphlet. But still others followed, and do follow in the same strain.
Added to the gorgeous statistics is the 'vituperative method. I, have before me ‘some Free Trade writings—not Prof Perry’s /—in which I find the term ‘‘alaves;” ‘‘fools” “lobbyists,” ‘‘log-rollers,” ‘‘humbug,” “atrocious oppression,” ‘bribery? ‘“out- -ragous fraud,” ‘‘licensed pillage,” ‘‘enor- nity of outrage,” and so on ad nauseam. : Those who allow themselves to condescend ,to such language are either conscious of a | week cause, or intent upon stirring up ,malignant feeiings. | Thereis also a singular vein of self-re- fatation in much of the Free Trade reason- ing, except it be regarded from an ex- clusively English view. They point to us the greater wealth of the manufacturing over the farming States. The great English Free Trade teacher, Fawcett, clearly shows, as we have seen, that the raw product is but a small part of the value of the finish- ed article. The logical inference is, that the farming States, should be also manu- facturing States. Variety of industries @ principle in all political economy. But instead of that the Free ” Let all the

England would then, in- deed ‘‘buy cheap,” but where could our farmers ‘‘sell dear?” Not only would they tind the English market limited, but they must meet the concentrated opposition of the black lands of the Azofi, of the Cremea, South Russia, Roumania, Servia, Bulgaria, and the Dobrudcha—all of the lands being asrich as the very richest ‘ands of the West.
English foresight is pouring into all these regions, amazing quantities of the 20st im- proved agricultural implements, many of thein our own inventions. A few years since Mr. Hamlin entered a vastmagazine, apparently designed for government stores, in the city of Galotz, Roumenia. He was filled with amazement at the piles of plows,
cultivators, reapers, mowers, threshing machines, winnowers, tedders, harrows, etc., etc. He asked, in astonishment, if
those articles found a ready sale. The agent assured him that the sale was increas- ing. The people were slowly learning to use them; broken pieces were so aasily re- placed that they were acquiring confidence, and that some large farims had doubled their harvesis without increase of expen- diture.

He prefers diversified industries at home to make his market secure and at hand. Otherwise he will be exposed to powerful fluctuations and competition. But the Free Trader, with a sweet innocence, asks him to shut his eyes to a!l this with the deceptive hope of getting a cheaper coat and cheaper shoes! The Free Trader aske the farmer to let England perform upon us the same operation which she has per- formed upon Turkey, Egypt, Japan, India, but which she cannot perform upor France, Germany, this country, or even upon her own culonies!

Nem McPuau, of Dennis River, C, B., committed suicide some time ago, by cutting his throat with razor. His body was found at Antigonish, on the 16th. Timoruy Mittoy was hanged at Mon- treal, on the 16th inst., for the murder of a farmer, at Longue Point. The crime for which Milloy suffered was one of the most cold blooded ever perpetrated in Canada: In November last Milloy, who was working for Nesbitt, in the capacity of a farm laborer, was discharged, and after a week spent in the city on a spree went to his former employer and demanded to be taken back, when refused he shot Nesbitt and finished his terrib'e work witha shovel. He was arrested and found guilty on the clearest evidence, at the last assizes. He died without making any public confession of his guilt.

tte Tue sad death is announced from Balti- more of Miss Duncan, a lady of nineteen, She suffered from insomnia, and sought re- fuge inthe fools’ paradise, hydrate of chloral. A bottle of the hypnotic was found in the girl’s bedroom, from which she had taken a dose largely in excess of the limits of safety. It ought to be understood that whiie chloral in the hands of the physician is a blessing, it is a most dangerons drug. In cases of lesion of the nerve centres or of heart disease, even a moderate dose, such as would be harmless to a perfectly scund constitution, will prove fatal. The sae of this drug ought to be surrounded with safe- guards, as in the majority of cases those who use it are the very last persons who should bo trusted with it.
