The steamboat Circassian of the Riche- lieu line ran into the steamer Prince Arthur of the rival line of the Montreal & Thou- sand Islands company shortly before enter- ing their basins at Montreal on the 21st insé, The two steamers had been racing down the Laciue rapids, and were trying to se which would arrive first. Both vessels were crowded with American tourists. A panic ensued after the crash, the ladies tamting and crying out wo be rescued. The Prince Arthur was stove in on one side at the wheel. An inquiry has been ordered by the harbor commissioner, The injured steamer atrempted to cross the otuer one’s bow, which could not be stopped in time. Had the collision eccurred sooner, @ calamity would have been ievitable.
