A boy eight years of age, named Gillen was drowned at Yarmouth, N.%., on Thursday evening last. He was last seen playing in a boat, and it is supposed he fell overboard.

Mr. Rozert Boxnor’s famous pair ‘Rarus” and ‘‘Pickard” trotted a first trial heat on Fleetwood Park the other day in 4.237. The track was at the time fetlock deep with mud.

A Curtosrry 1s Wueat.—Mr. Fred Jones, son of Abner Jones, Esq , left a curiosity in wheat at the Moncton ‘‘Times”’ office on the the llth. It was picked from a field on the farm and consists of 24 fully developed stalks of wheat, coming from one solid root and ap- parently from one kernel. The wheat is all af good size and fully headed out.

Deatu oy A New Bronswickek aT Sea — The sad intelligence has been received by his family at Point Du Chene of the death, in the beginning of March last (apparently on the 9th), of Nelson H. Hanington, mate of the “Mary J. Cooke.” The decased came te ‘his death by being struck—while on a voyage from Para to Brazil bya broken spar. The blow was so severe that he never spoke afterwards and lived only till next day. He was buried at sea. The deceased was brother of Mr, George L. Hanington and half brother of Miss Ida Schurman, both of the Point du Chene House. They recently met with a severe trial in the burning of that hotel, as all their family souvenirs and ornaments were destroyed by the fire. This fresh trial will be a heavy blow

A letter to General Lynch, dated Farma, July 7, reports that Colonel Urriola dis- persed a number of Monteneros on the 4th inst., in Conception, killing 75 of them and losing only one of his men. On the 6th inst., he encountered another party at Pacao, killing six men, among them Col. Rios, sub-prefect of Anja.

The French astronomers sent to Caroline Island, in the South Pacific, to study the solar eclipse of May 6, have arrived at San Francisco. They report finding a red star, which itis believed will prove a new dis- covery. The eclipse lasted 5 minutes and 32 seconds. They noticed several new features in the corona, chiefly a white prominence supposed to be vapor or white

clouds.

The pauper emigrants returned to Ire- land by order of the American authorities on the steamers Furnessia and Spain were landed at Queenstown yesterday. All accounts agree in describing them as a wretched class of people. One family, con- sisting of man, wife and five children, were left lying on the wharf for three hours before the officials, who were not advised of their coming, provided for their wants.
