Beavers Score 4-3 .Win Over Halifax St. Mary's

HALIFAX. Feb. 15 — (CP) - S t John Beavers fired two thud-period goals to defeat Hali- fax St. Mary's 4-3 tonight and move into a tie for top spot with Halifax in the Maritime Senior Hockey League. The defeat crack- ed a 13-game Halifax win streak, longest skein of the season.

The result lefit the fin-al stand- ing of the two clubs strictly on the last three games of the sche- dule. Each club plays two games against Amherst and one against liloncton. The Beavers are home for all three while Halifax ends its home season here tomorrow night against Ramblers.

Outshot and outplayed for the better part of three periods, Beav- ers connected for the tieintg goal whole Don McLaughlin was serv- ing a holding penalty and fired the winner three minutes later.

Outstanding Saint John player on the ice. Dick Wray hit the rig- ging th-ree times. Wray. going fast both ways all night. shot the first two Saint John goals and popped in the winner after Buck Whitlock had tied the score. Twice Beavers battled back after being two goals down and by sheer pcr- sisténce sifted through for their winning margin.

It was one of the better games of the season. Both clubs poured it on most of ithe way’. lagging only for a few minutes in the first period and in the first half of the third when the checking became close.

Keen Competition As Play Opens For P. E. I. Curling Championship

The first and second rounds of the Provincial Curling Champion- ships foi- the British Consols Tro- phy were run off at the Charlotte- town Curling Club yesterda? af- ternoon and evening when a total oi.‘ seven rinks. representing Al- bcrton, Summerslde, Montague and Charlottetown competed.

The Charlottetown rink. skipped by ELF. Acorn and the Dr. Clark rink of Summerside. were the only two teams to remain undefeated in two matches played. while all but one of the seven rinks competing. renuiinerl in tile running at. the conclusion of yesterday's play. The Dr. Johnston skipped rink from Montague was knocked out by two losses. .

The six rinks who are still in the competition will compete in third round play today ‘with the first matches scheduled for ten o'clock this morning.

In reply. Mr. J.H. Pike on be- half of his rink. spoke of their enjoyment of the competition so far, and mentioned the possibility of a new curling club in Oleary next fall.

Short. comments were also heard from M.r. L.H. Poole of Montague. Mr. H. Saunders, Mr. H. lifaoNelll, Mr. G. Hawkins and Mr. F. Acorn of Charlottetown.

After a. short, discussion on the merits of having only one repre- sentative rink from each club at. Bonspicls, the meeting adjourned in order to play the evening matches.
