When one looks over a@ common crowd, or over a community of people, the sta:tling fact is that so large a part are nobodies. I do not mean that they are merely not Cistinguished, but that they are insigni- ficant: mere echoes in the world. Take out one-tenth of the people and the nine tenths would barely make aliving. They would do no fresh thinking and no in- vestigating of the unknown. Problems would never be solved; rarely even

Artificial Petroleum.

It is, perhaps, not generally known that petroleurr can now be produced artificially by a very cheap process and imple method, being the distillation, in a strong iron vessel, under a pressure of twenty-five atmospheres, of the ani- mal fats and oilsat a temperature of 30¢ to 400 degreesC. Under favorable con- ditions seventy percent of the fatty oil is transformed into petroleum, which is ninety per cent of the theoretical yield. The product thus obtained has been

| found to be in every particular identical | with natural petroleum.

( It is suggested that, with modifications of conditions in the process, oils of different grades may

| be produced.

Is Your Skin Tender.

The skin is really the most wonderful and important organ of the human body. Night and day, every hour of our lives, it is filtering out from the blood useless or poisonods debris. The United States Government has filed a claim for $15,000,000 against the estate of the late Senator Leland Stanford as a preliminary step to enforce jhe Govern- ment’s claim against the original holders of the Central Pacific railroad grant. The attention of Commercial Travellers is called to the following sections of an Act ——_ by the Legislative Assembly of Prince

ward Isiand, Session 1894, intituled “An Act to Impose a Direct Tax on Certain Classes of Traders ” :—

1. “ From and after the passing of this Act every casual trader not permanently residing in this Province doing business within this Province, commonly known as “Commercial Travellers,” and every person not permanent- ly residing in this Province, and who seils either for himself or any other person any goods, wares or merchandize in this Province, or solicits or canvasses tor orders either for himseif or any other person for the sale, ex- change or purchase of any goods, wares or merchandize w.thin this Province, either by the production of sampies, photographs, cata- logues, printed or written matter, or simply by word of mouth without the production of samples, photographs, catalogues, printed or written matter, shall, before he or she enters upon the business of so selling any goods, wares or merchandize, or soliciting or can- vassing for such orders, pay to the Provincial Treasurer of this Province an annual licen e fee or direct tax of fifteen dollars.”

2.“ Upon payment of the said license fee or direct tax, the said Provincial Treasurer shall grant a license authorizing the person therein named toce!! goods, wares and mer- chandize in this Province, and to solicit and canvass for orders for the sale, exchange or purchase of goods, wares and merchandize within this Provinee. Such license shall be granted and remain in force for the space of one year following the date upon which the said license shall be granted and no lonzer.”
