Most physicians in looking for the cause of an ailment think of the moet common cause or oauss. In the case of rheumatism the“- fore it is only natural that infected teeth or tonsils should be given first thought became it is believed thatnotless than7inevery10 cases are due to these two causes.

However as there are three of every 10 casesdue to other causes than infected teeth or tonsils, this must be remembered.

For instance if there are no in- fected teeth, and tonsils are normal or have been removed, the search for the cause of th erheumatism should not end, but should be di- rected toward the large intestine, the gall bladder. and perhaps oth- er organs oi the body.

Sometimes a single tooth, not very badly infected, may be thought to be causing the trouble. It has been shown that one tooth with a tiny abscess, or with the point of the root just beginning to break down has been the cause of severe rheumatism.

The fact that this one tooth has been causing the trouble was pio- ven by the fact that immediately after its removal the symptoms be- came very much worse for a short time because the poisons about the root poured into the wide open blood vessels of the cavity in large amounts instessfof in the smaller amounts which the body was hsdl- ing fairly well._

After this flare-up of the pain or swelling the symptoms gradually become less severe and in a few monilhs the joints are freely mov- able without pain.

Howes, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Alberta, and President of the Canadian Society of ‘Technical Agrliculturists.
