Incoming Mayor Promises Public Transit, but Unsure when it will Arrive

Incoming Mayor of Charlottetov Clifford Lee says he is ‘fully com- mitted’ to ensuring Charlottetown adopts a public transit system. However, when asked repeatedly with the question of when the long-awaited transit system will begin operating, he refused to speculate on a date, saying he was not sure when the service will become operational.

"I am fully committed to seeing that the citizens of Charlottetown are served by a pub- lic transit system," Mr. Lee said. "In March of this year as Finance Chair I earmarked $100 000 for a subsidized transit system for the last 3 months of 2003. However, we obviously do not have the sys- tem in place yet."

These plans to establish a transit system by this autumn fell apart in the late summer, as by late August it was apparent that the system would not be running by October as the city had planned. The issue vanished in the media, and was brought back to the fore- front by mayoralty candidate Will McFadden, who solely focused on the need for a transit system during his campaign for the municipal election held November 3. Late in the campaign, Mr. Lee announced that introducing a transit system as one of his election promises in his campaign. By contrast, his closest competitor in the election, Kathleen Casey, did not commit to

a transit system. The issue of a transit system is now before city council.

"Currently three proposals to operate this system have been submitted to city council," Mr. Lee explained. "An individual special- izing in mass transit is currently assessing the proposals and will make recommendations to the city council."

Although Mr. Lee would not say when the transit system would begin he did say that he was

- hopeful the successful proposal

would be selected within a month. Then pressed again about the potential start date he only answered by saying it was difficult to say, but of course the sooner, the better. He did speculate that the transit system may operate with vans instead of buses.
