OTTAWA, Plant breeders and pathologists of the Canada Department of Agriculture are giving Septoria disease top pri— ority in their oat breeding pro- gram. To date, none of the sever- al hundred varieties tested under field and greenhouse conditions in eastern Canada show satisfactory resistance to this disease.

Septoria disease in oats is widespread over the whole of eastern Canada and is particular- ly severe in the Atlantic Provin- ces. Acording Lo F.J. Zillinsky of

it is one of the most serious dis- eases of oats.

Starting as purplish grey spots on the young oat leaves in June, the disease develops rapidly. It produces irregular greyish or brownish grey blotches on the lea- ves and leaf sheaths. thus inter- fering with the, food producing functions of the leaves.

toria spreads .to the stem causing straw weakness and increases the tendency of the crop to lodge. Un- der severe conditions the blumes and seeds are also affected, show- in-g up as grey or black spots. Seed treatment and chemical sprays are either ineffective or not commercially practical as a disease control measure.
