I go still further and say. that in this Day of Victory there are all too many who evidently have failed to appreciate God's hand in our Victory at all .. .. . who have even no true sense o! apprecia- tion whatever of what other fel- low-beings have paid in sacrifice and service for this Victory.

That has been proved beyond any shadow of a doubt by the disgraceful and unwarranted des- truction of private and public property that has marked the Victory celebrations in some of our communities.

While it may be true that in some centres the citizens oi some of the communities may have par- ticipated in the tragic events that have transpired yet, we must re- member that the major portion oi- those guilty of dmrading revelry and wanton destruction represent a great cross section of Canadian life . . the mobs were made up of citizens from almost every part of this Dominion.

Excuses .. there can be found no legitimate excuses whatever for what happened in Halifax, Sydney. New Waterdord. and some other communities.

Certainly there are certain rights and privileges which citizens in a democratic country ought to enjoy. on the other hand the laws are set according to the will oi the majority oi.’ our citizens. and those laws ought to be respected and honored.

As one scans the papers one would imagine that for all too many. men and women alike, the noblest way to celebrate the Victory was by becoming intoxi- cated, and that every lew could ble broken to satisfy their base de- sres.

As Christian people this day we voice our protest against all such who have brought shame to this land by their lack of decency. and‘ respect for law and order on which‘ we as a Canadian people have prided ourselves.

To bring financial loss. in some instances complete financial ruin. to many who have given so much‘ and made great sacrifice through these war years-to add to el-
