| his own life by putting a builet through his heart. Benier soon afterwards returned. The revelation of the wife’s infidelity came te him so suddenly, that his mind broke down and he fied from the scene,a raving maniac.

Geneva gin, rum, whiskey and unenumer- ated articles of like kinds, a specific duty of $1.75 per imperial gallon, and on brandy a specific duty of $2.

The excitement over the exposure of London's secret vice made by the Pall Mall Gazette continues unabated. The demand for papers is enormous. Large crowds sur- round the publishing office and extra police have been ordered te protect the Gazfle building from being approached by persons having no legitmate business there. The Crown lawyers are considering the advisability of prosecuting the publishers of the Gazette. Their decision is awaited with anxiety.

The Gazette this evening publishes an editorial, thanking the city authorities fcr attempting to suppress sales of the paper thereby breakiug the conspiracy of secrecy maintained by the press concerning the Gazette's revelations.

“The police seizures of the newspapers are common in Vienna,” continues the Gazette in its article, ‘‘but such high hand- ed outrages on the freedom of the press should have been im osstble in Londen. Instead of waging war against street boys, let the auther'ties take action againat the responsible parties in this business. If we havo published anything obscene let them prosecute us. We deny that anything has been published by us deserving that course, and we declare that the authorities are cowards or worse if they fail to proceed against us after having charged in open Court that the Gazette was an obscene publication. We reluctantly adopted this mode of publ:- cation in order to arouse men toa just sense of the horrors existing all around them. Now, the more public'ty the better. We are prepared to prove our statements. We cai summon witnesses, from the Dean of Canterbury and the- Prince of Wales down io Mrs. Jeffreys. We will put our chief informant and his assistant in the witness box. Let those who do not wish to shake the very foundations of society, think twice before compe'ling us to confront in court brothel keepers with princes of the blood, and prominent public men with vic- tims of their lawless vice.
