Peter Rabbit is happy-goqucky, but in a way Unc' Billy Possum lg even more so. Unc' Billy wanders about poking his long nose into all sorts of places. many of them oiaces where his nose has no busi-

lCbS to be. He seems never to wor- y. it is probable that he is caught nore oftengthan any other of the Ereen Forest folk. So far he has ilways managed to escape. He has risen picked up and shaken; push. ed about on the ground: knocked around generally. Yet he has al- ways managed to come up grin. :i:ng.

Some folks think Uncl Billy is :lupid.' Usually the folks who are 'cally stupid are the one's who hmk others are stupid. It is so in he case of Unc' Billy Possum. The :roof that Unc' Billy isn't stupid 5 the fact that he is still around. -vhile some of those who thought ihemselves smart haven't been rround for a long time.

The truth is Unc' Billy Possum arobably knows a lot more about :15 neighbors. those really to fear, than most folks give him credit !nr. I suspect that he knows that Yowler the Bobcat, or Buster Bear )r Old Man Coyote, or even Roddy Fox. is much more to be feared than a Dog. I suspect that he xnows that a dog will chase him Ind try to kill him Just for fun. mt that any one of the others will nil him to out. He can spoil that iogls fun by pretending to be dead. but he cant keep himself from be- ng eaten by just pretending to be lead. So Unc' Billy is a bit care- ul about whom he tries to fool by iretending to be dead.

Unc' Billy was poking around in his usual happy-go-lucky way in the Green Forest. lie was looking for something to eat. Almost any- thing that anybody else can eat. Unc' Billy can eat and does. So it s seldom that he goes hungry for very long at a time. He isn't fussy ibout his food. It is nice to be fus- ;y. but not to be too fussy.

"Woof! Woofi" Unc' Billy Poo ium froze in his tracks. as the say- Eng is. That is he stopped and stood perfectly still. He knew that voice. I-le had heard it before. It was the vozce of Buster Bear.

Now if that had been the voice oi Bowser the Hound, or Flip the Terrier. or any other dog. it is like- ly that Unc' Bill; would simply have fallen over on the ground Ind played dead. But he didn't do Ihat this time. No. sir, he didn't do that this time. I suspect that he was tempted to. but he thought twice. So instead of playing dead as he had so often done. and nearly loves to do. he rambled up the nearest tree and he didn't waste any time in doing it. It is surprising how quickly slow follra :an move when they think they trust.

”Woof! Woof!" said Buster Bear again. Unci Billy Possum scramb- led faster it that were possible. He had taken to the nearest tree with- out looking tosce what kind of I tree it was. At the moment he iidn't really care. Now it happen- rd that that was a dead tree. Real- y it was a tall sturnp or stub of l tree. the -upper part of which had been broken off in some great vind. Unc' Billy kept right on icramblinglup that tree .until he 'eachcd the broken top. When he got there he sighed. It was a sigh )f relief. The top of that tree was iollow. Unc' Billy climbed right lawn in that hollow out of sight Iln;I once more he sighed with re-

The usual (and often intelligent) measure employed by a defender in Weat'a position, is to play low on the heart ace and again low on the second lead, thus giving de- clarer the chance to go astray by putting in the ten. When there has been no bidding. this defense very often succeeds. because declax-er may.have cause to play dummy'a nine or ten in the hope,of forcing out the king. In this case. however. West felt that his vulnerable bid had marked him with the heart king. so. when the heart ace was cashed, Wat had no chance to es- tablish hearts without giving East the lead. and no chance for his contract.
